 Changing the Register Vent?
Author: LeOpus1190s

I have heard this mentioned a few times before. Would the vent of a festival clarinet be different from that of the R-13? What would the effects be of changing these vents. Finally where could one order special vents to try?

I would try one of the good repair techs who do custom work. Guy Chadash makes his own custom ones that work well. I am sure there are others out there who do the same.

The vent has a compromise function for dozens of situations, none of which it does ideally. The vent should be a different shap/size/position for EVERY notre that it is used for. Each manufacturer, for each model, has settled on a different compromise in the shape and position.

Some manufacturers probably put a lot of effort into this aspect of design. Others seem, at times, to have done little more than guess, including those makers with respectable names.

For a person without expertise in the acoustics of clarinet design, changing the vent would be entirely a hit-and-miss affair. Best to at least keep the original! Or by all means, take it to an expert, of which there are few.

Of course, the set of compromises an expert finds personally ideal, may not suit YOUR particular needs.

Life is simple only in the respects in which we don't know how complicated it actually is!

I have heard that the Festival Vent works better on the R13, but I am not sure whether this is for the A or Bb or both.

Galper had a register replacement that worked nicely...I tried it on a Selmer 10S that he owned. I think that it was designed for the Buffets, but you should look into the specifics. It came with a tool for changing the vent.

A highly regarded tech. altered my vent on an R13 A . This did indeed help.
Perhaps Dave Spiegenthal or Walt Grabner or Omar H. can elucidate. I am sure that the vent and its placement follow the laws of acoustical physics (Helmholtz formulae, etc) that govern barrel tapers and other intraluminal structures. Expert advice is indicated.

Abe Galper has designed a register vent and key for the R13 which has had good reviews and is not difficult to install as a DIY job. I hope it will continue to be available.
Karel.

And the tubes are different. Not sure if it would even fit the Festival Model!
