Hi, I have heard that some Buffet serial numbers indicate an especially good period in clarinet manufacturing. I have an R13 Bb with the serial number 119921, and was wondering if perhaps this would fit into that time period. If anyone could give me any information about my serial number, it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Made in the first few months of 1971.
How does it play for you? Isn't that the important question? ...GBK

But on the third Tuesday of February, 1971, the French national soccer team lost a title match and all the Buffet workers were morose and made really bad clarinets that day --- so you have to be careful even with those legendary '71 R-13s.

Dave...
That's nothing, compared to what happened to Buffet clarinets the day it was announced that the 1971 Jerry Lewis Film Festival was cancelled ...GBK

To get back on track -
There are 2 camps, which have very different opinions about the quality of the Buffet clarinets over the years.
Some feel that the best clarinets were made during the so-called "golden age" from about #70xxx (1962) to about #125xxx (1971). They are adamant that the quality of materials used, the design and the workmanship have never been duplicated. Hans Moennig, even stopped selling clarinets after #125,000 because he did not like the changes that were made in the keywork.
Others feel that today's Buffet clarinets, with more models and design choices, are better than any that were previously made and we are now in a new "golden age".
Pick your side ...GBK

Thank you for all of your responses. I was just curious because I have a particular fondness for my instrument as well as others made around that time, in terms of the tone and feel.
