 Smart things you've said/heard musically
Author: Meri
Date:   2004-08-25 21:47

This is an offshoot of the stupid things you've said/heard musically...so what are some of the smart things you have said or heard related to music?

I'll start:

"If you're having a problem with your playing, it's usually air" (from my former teacher)

"If your barreljoint isn't soaked from about an hour of playing, you're not putting enough air through the instrument." (what I frequently tell my students)

"Think of the sound resonating inside your skull" (My pianist, to one of my students in a rehearsal, working on the Schumann Fantasy-Piece no. 1)

"You should get rid of about 10% of your students every year." (from a vocal teacher I know)

Meri

"There is a difference between being flat and sounding in tune, and being in tune but sounding flat. The first I can live with; the second I cannot."

"There are two golden rules for an orchestra: start together and finish together. The public doesn't give a damn what goes on in between."
-Sir Thomas Beecham

"Modern music is as dangerous as narcotics."
-Pietro Mascagni

"A good composer is slowly discovered a bad composer is slowly found out."
-Ernest Newman

"A good composer does not imitate; he steals."
-Igor Stravinsky

"Composers shouldn't think too much — it interferes with their plagiarism."
-Howard Dietz

"The high note is not the only thing."
-Placido Domingo

And of course, the classic Mark Twain quote:

"Wagner's music is better than it sounds."
-Mark Twain

The basis of good tongueing is airflow.

99% of playing the clarinet is in your head.

Going back to basics will get you over hangups you didn't know you had.

Playing the clarinet is like looking after a box of puppies (honest, it is)

And of course.....

Hi,

From the great Dr. William Revelli of the University of Michigan to his marching band about rehearsals.

"To be on-time is to be late; to be early is to be on-time"

I tell this to all my students at the start of each semester.

ok... so my Band Director made a list of maxims...

1. Don't give excuses why you can't accomplish something. Instead, create a plan for your success...
2. Someone may be smarter, more talented, and better looking than you, but you can always out-work them...
3. Don't do anything that you would have to explain...
4. Don't do anything that wouldn't make your parents proud...
5. EARLY is on time; ON TIME is late; LATE is inexcusable...
6. Don't use drugs. EVER!
7. Winning is a by-product of excellence...
8. Generally speaking, you aren't learning much when your lips are moving...
9. Never miss a good opportunity to close your mouth...
10. Never Practice. Always PERFORM!
11. There is no whining in band!
12. You'd better bring your big kid pants (he usually says that when we're playing something hard)

Most of them have nothing to do with music, and yet it's good advice...

1. Buy a copy of Baermann III.
2. Put in on your music stand. Never remove it.
3. Play in it for 30 minutes a day - everyday - for the rest of your life

Being a sports fan and former coach, I would certainly include many of the sayings of Coach Lombardi.

“If winning isn’t everything, why do they keep score?” --- Vincent Lombardi

“Winning is not a sometime thing; it’s an all the time thing. You don't win once in a while; you don't do things right once in a while; you do them right all the time. Winning is a habit.” --- Vincent Lombardi

“Practice does not make perfect. Only perfect practice makes perfect.” --- Lombardi

and to add to what my college director used to say...

"To be early is to be on time. To be on time is late. To be late is to be dead."

and those who can not accomplish any of the above......they become

Here's one my Band Director says all the time.
"Practice doesn't make perfect, practice makes permanent. Perfect practice makes perfect"-Mr. Tim Libby.

A few more I found.

"Anything that is too stupid to be spoken is sung."
- Voltaire

"There's nothing remarkable about it. All one has to do is hit the right keys at the right time and the instrument plays itself."
- Johann Sebastian Bach
(no truer words ever spoken. kind of reminds me of that thread we had a while back about how playing wind instruments can be digressed to just putting down the fingers and blowing)

"I think there are only three things America will be known for 2,000 years from now when they study this civilization: the Constitution, jazz music, and baseball." - Gerald Early

Hi,

I know I had one chance already but this is just too true about music or any field that one might want to apply these words.

"Luck is the residue of design"

Branch Rickey - manager of the Brooklyn Dodgers

PS MaryBGood's list is quite excellent; some real gems. I really liked "You'd better bring your big kid pants."

PS2 But then there is "Life moves pretty fast. You don't stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it (Ferris Bueller, 1986)

Slight variation on a previous post:

Those who can.......................do.
Those who can't.....................teach.
Those who can't teach...........conduct.

I heard this at a bandfest weekend some years ago. I was sitting beside my conductor at the time. Even he laughed, partly because the person sharing this gem was also a conductor.

'Blow more air'- most of my teachers, also said by me to my students.

"Even if you aren't confident with the music, play it as though you were. It will sound better." said by me to my students.

"I'll bet you $1 you can't play that passage." They get to play it as slow as they want, but it has to be right, and I really take their dollar if they mess it up, and give them mine if they get it right.

Also, "Are there any notes in that passage you don't know?" They say "no". I reply, "then get every note right".
