i got a RELLY old clarinet that is a Gretsch. i was told by a music store that Gretsch has never made clarinets, so i was wondering if anybody has any idea of if Gretsch made the clarinet or if Gretsch bought it from another company and put their name on it. If they did buy the clarinet i would like to know what company they would've bought it from.

The Fred Gretsch Manufacturing Company (Brooklyn, NY 1883-) were woodwind dealers, employing the trade name "Serenader". They also invented the "saxonette" (a saxophone model clarinet).

Is this the same Gretsch as the one of guitar fame or a different company?
I know I seen Gretsch clarinets on eBay with some regularity.

Gretsch guitars have a reputation of being weird, but wonderful...associated with Chet Atkins, and 1950's rockabilly players...made most popular by the beatles. Gretsch is also known for their drums.....they made/contracted out huge lines of many types of instruments, ranging in quality from garbage to superb. Fred gretsch Jr took over the company from FG Sr upon his untimely death. He was still in knickers, and built the company into a powerhouse in the 1930's...the company/name has been revived by a gretsch family member...

Many years ago, Gretsch imported a number of different brands of clarinets and saxophones from European makers. Some of the French saxes were quite good for the money, although Selmer USA did not lose any sleep over them. Those sold under the Gretsch name were low priced horns of varying origin, kind of a price leader or best buy type of thing. BTW, Gretsch was back then the American importer for the plastic saxophones like the one that Ornette Coleman played -- Grafton Acrylic.

I recently purchased a Gretsch clarinet from a second-hand store for my daughter. The serial number is 4443. I wonder, do I have a treasure or just a clarinet? Can you help?
