Just curious... A student of mine has a clarinet that has a hairline crack in the interior of the barrel. Can anything be done to prevent it from spreading without too much of a cost? Just thought I would get your ideas before taking it to a repair tech.
Thanks,
K. Denny

I'd want to be positive it's a crack first...as opposed to,for example, a scratch.

If it is a crack, then it can almost certainly be stabilised and filled, by applying to it, tiny drop by tiny drop, a high quality, low viscosity superglue. It will first seep by capillary action to the deepest recesses of the crack, then progressively fill it. Apply from a few drops on a surface, using a needle.
A Dremel(or equivalent) with abrasive rubber wheel would be ideal to finish off flush, any excess. A wooden stick with a slot in the end, with fine sand paper wrapped through then around it, would be an alternative.
