Wow -- hasn't been a good year for the big film score composers. Another huge loss to the industry.

The Great Escape is one heck of a score and I think all of you should see this inspired film!!!

Mr. Bernstein's theme (and entire soundtrack) from the movie, "The Sons of Katie Elder" (1965) was among my favorite western melodies.

I particularly enjoyed "The Magnificent Seven" score. (that was Elmer, wasn't it?)

He wrote the score for " To Kill a Mockingbird", which I consider to be one of the most beautiful and haunting file scores ever written.

A funny recollection of Elmer:
At the first session of one his many films, Elmer jumped up on the podium and his first words to us were,"I'm ELMER Bernstein, not Lenny, and, yes, I conduct LEFT handed!"
Some of the guys in NYC often referred to Elmer as "Bernstein West,"
I do miss him and his wonderful scores.

He was a legend among legends. Sad to hear about his passing! Michael Kamen's passing this year was really sad too.

Yes, losing Elmer Bernstein, along with Michael Kamen and Jerry Goldsmith's passing, and also Michael Small, made this season a very bad time for great composers of film scores.

Jerry Goldsmith - yeah, he was among my very favorite scorers.
John, have you heard Evan Evan's music? Son of Jazz legend Bill Evans and set a record at 14 winning Disney's Film Score competition (he's 25 now).
Really good.

Hi David:
"John, have you heard Evan Evan's music? Son of Jazz legend Bill Evans and set a record at 14 winning Disney's Film Score competition (he's 25 now)."
I haven't heard Evan's music, but I'll give him a listen. I heard his father, Bill, play live in Detroit's famous "Minor Key" jazz club in the late 1950's. He was awesome!
In terms of losing some great musicians, we've lost many jazz greats way too young, including Bill Evans.

Yup. Have a listen to Evan, he's a monster - I do some Management work for him.
He is very similar in style to Bernard Hermann.
