 Mouthpiece marked N4 France
Author: M. Brand
Date:   2000-01-06 05:07

I have come across a mouthpiece with the markings "N4" and "France". It appears to be a hard rubber black mouthpiece with no other identifying marks. Any clues as to who the maker might be?

Thanks in advance.

I unfortunately cannot help you, but i would be interested in any response, as i recently was given a similarly marked mouthpiece--stamped "France" adjacent one side of the table and "X4" adjacent the other.

Isn't this the lay/tip opening info that LeBlanc uses on their student [orig equip!] mp's? Don

I have a same one that came with my Leblanc L7.
I thought that this is RIFFAULT from France because only this brand has N4 model. Anyway,I sent this mpc to Mr. Walter Grabner to reface. He said that this mpc is as good as one that he made for me. Yes, it is.
I like this mpc better than any others.

I'm with Ken. In all probability you have a Riffault, both because of the N marking and because years ago, Leblanc's "Made in France" mpces were all either Riffaults or Vandorens

I would say that the brand of this clarinet would probably be evette because I have a clarinet with France and N-4 on the mouthpiece.

Mouthpieces have no relation to the brand of clarinet ...GBK

Funny this should come up today. Yesterday I was playing the Riffault "Superfini" (N3) that Vytas Krass redid - now I like it (I had not, at first)!

I have an "N4" unmarked escept for "France." It's quite nice with the original facing.

Riffaults were good. I have a Riffault (unmarked, but so identified by Vytas) that I think is superlative - really excellent. This one has 3 rings down and one up. It is maked "France" and "G8."

Vytas is the Riffault expert.

O the mysteries and opportunites of unmarked mouthpieces!

Of course, in the end, it's about how the reed and the mouthpiece are talking to one another. Wish I had known that about 2 grand ago.

Bill.

I believe Riffault's position in Europe is similar to that of Babbitt in the US, that is, they provide mouthpiece blanks and finished-but-unmarked mouthpieces to many instrument and mouthpiece manufacturers who in turn stamp their logos and/or model numbers on them; as well as making finished mouthpieces with their own (i.e. Riffault or Babbitt) names/logos. I would agree that a mouthpiece marked "N4" is very likely a Riffault product.

I also came across an N3 mouthpiece which is also marked Couesnon and is superb. A listing on Ebay for a Lelandais mouthpiece which was also marked N4 came up recently. Do any of the mouthpiece experts on this board know if Riffault made these mouthpieces for Lel, or the other way around????

Now I've found an N3 marked mouthpiece that is a Woodwind New York model. So would Woodwind have made the blank or Riffault? Any expert opinions out there?

Many Riffault original mouthpieces (and some stencils by Riffault) have been marked N4, N3 etc. This making appear on the left side. If you see "France" stamped on the right side it's definitely a Riffault. Many companies like Leblanc, Noblet, Woodwind Co., Couesnon, Ideal etc. used these stencils under their own name.
