Hi i'm 17 and have been playing the clarinet for six years. I have a rubbish plastic clarinet that is fit for the bin. I am thinking of buying a leblanc noblet 40 as my parents can't afford to spend too much on my new clarinet. Oppinions?

The Leblanc Noblet 40 is a fine step-up instrument. However, before you make an important purchase, it's best to consult a qualified private teacher (such as your own) especially if you plan to play at the university level. In this case, your teacher (or future teacher) will undoubtedly have certain preferences and may even assist you in selecting the proper instrument.

While it is possible to get good items on eBay, it is more likely that anything you bid on there may need $100 to $200 in overhaul costs after you get it and before you can play it. So be very careful in your bidding.

"anything you bid on"......not a true statement. Some place instruments there that are reconditioned or restored and have been play tested.

But a good idea nonetheless to budget for.
I bought an SML "reconditioned/restored/play tested by a pro" that I put 12 hours in "reconditioning/restoring/play testing". Luckily it was cheap, but 3-4 hours of labor restoring it (I take at least three times as long as someone who does it for a living) would have been a significant investment.

I bought a Leblanc Noblet 40 on ebay and have been very happy with it. Several people on this board told me it was a great step-up instrument, and I agree. I must say in all honesty that as I've gotten better my plastic Vito really sounds pretty good also. So, don't expect miracles just because it's wood.

Please note that I said "likely" not "absolutely". Although there area few instruments on eBay that have already been reconditioned, that is not the norm.
