Hi, Sheila! Here is a one enthusiastic youngster! I´m 16 and really enjoying playing the clarinet...I haven´t played too long seriously. About a year and a half to be accurate. Now I just can´t stop. I´m soon starting to look for a pro horn and can´t wait when I have my hands on it! Most likely, I will be playing even more when I have one.

HAHA!!!!! I'm 14... Very very excited... To the point of being nearly psychotic, hence the name psychotic lil clarinet girl... HAHA! I'm j/k (kinda)... Anyways, I'm so glad you're excited about playing... I like to see "enthusiastic youngsters" also... I've been playing clarinet for about a year now... I'm excited I'm 1 year old!!!!! hahaha!!! I could type a whole page if I wanted to... hm... LET'S DO IT!!!!
So, I just started clarinet in 9th grade (a year ago), and tried out for jr. high mid-state after three months... It was a bummer, because the judges didn't even let me finish my piece because they had to go to the bathroom... grr... Like I would've made it anyways, yeah right I wish! But I wanted to do what everyone else was doing, so I tried out nonetheless... Anyways, that was quite a depressing winter... But this year I'm trying out for senior high mid-state/all-state... BE AFRAID, BE VERY AFRAID WHEN THAT TIME COMES!!! Because you'll be seeing so many posts up here about it, it won't be funny... HAHAHA!! Anyways... I'm excited... My goal this year is to get first chair, but it's probably not gonna happen... I'm trying to be optomistic though, so it's possible... I loved the whole thing on the other thread about "I know I suck, but everyone else sucks worse than me, so if I suck less than them, then I'll get FIRST CHAIR!!!!!" so true... HAHA! lol...
So Sheila, are you going to play the clarinet in band, or just playing it for fun?... Didn't you say you were playing flute? Either way, best of luck to ya, and don't lose your enthusiasm...

"So Sheila, are you going to play the clarinet in band, or just playing it for fun?... Didn't you say you were playing flute?" (mary)
Yes, I am still playing flute in band, but what I have thought of, is, if (I repeat IF) my band teacher (with which I have a nice friendship) needs more clarinets for a part, I can do it. See, We only had ONE clarinet, and SIX flutes in our band last year, (well, thats a big difference, seeing as we only had 18 ppl in the band) Soooo, thats my plan. Oh ya, and I'm playing the piano in jazz band, (and again, clarinet if needed) that just about summs it all up!

Hey Nicki,
Guess what? The only instrument out of your list that I don't play, is Sax! I play piano, clarinet, flute, and recorder too! Too cool!

*watches at the board is taken over by the little ones*
Oh, I'm 17. I've been playing clarinet for...ever. Well 7 years. I started practicing almost daily since last year after I made all state band (shouldn't it be the other way around?). I am going into music in college, which is soon... ack, college auditions! I will most likely be going to UMD-CP. I'm just waiting around for my R-13 to get back from the Brannens...

I'm definitely an "enthusiastic youngster" though I don't post on this board much. I'm in 9th grade and have been playing since 6th grade. I didn't start really liking the clarinet until the summer after my first year. -Then I started getting competitive and took off! However I didn't really get really serious till last fall when I started taking lessons for the 1st time!
I'm probably not as dedicated as some of ya'll...I go thru spurts at times, but most of the time I'm pretty at attached to my clarinet.
I also play bass clarinet, piano, and tenor (or soprano) recorder and sorta know how to play the ocarina. But of course I love the clarinet best of all those! I really want to learn sax and cello! (is that wierd or no?)
Mary, you said you were home schooled? If so, how are you participating in a school band or are you not? I've been home school all my life and play in a home school (wonderful!!) band! In fact I get to give a speech on Monday night all about my band and how wonderful it is! I love being home schooled!

I was homeschooled, which is past tense... I had no idea they had a homeschool band... 5-7th grade I went to a private school that didn't have a band whatsoever, all before 5th grade I was homeschooled... I wasn't introduced to anything musical until 8th grade, which that year I was homeschooled again... That's when my mom suggested I take piano lessons... I was like, sure I guess, I don't care... So, after my first few lessons I practiced and practiced the same things over and over again... My parents got really annoyed by it... Anyways, my parents figured it would be too hard to homeschool in highschool, so they decided to send me to a public school... It's a pretty new school, so I could get away with just starting an instrument... kinda... So, my mom suggested I join band, because I liked the piano so much... Which meant I would have to learn a wind instrument... I tried flute for like a day and gave up because I couldn't get a sound out... But my dad suggested maybe clarinet, because my aunt had played it in high school... So, the first time I tried I couldn't get a sound out, I wasn't blowing hard enough, after a couple of hours I finally got a sound out though... Of course, I didn't realize I was playing on a size three reed... Anyways, I could go on and on and on... But, I've been playing for a year now, and I'm working on some rose etudes... And I've been playing the piano for two years now, and I'm working on Prelude in C# Minor by Rachmanichov...
Homeschooling has its benefits such as sleeping late, eating decent food (besides school food), and getting away with turning in work late... But I must admit I prefer public school... So, I guess it depends on the person... But keep your enthusiasm up, it's always nice to see someone else also enthusiastic...

Sheila,
That's awesome. You should pick up sax... the fingerings are VERY similar to flute... I thought it was pretty easy. I play it in pep band and our *new* jazz band! Yea!!
ZCClarinet,
I'm going into music too! Maybe ONU or somewhere close to me. Good luck with your auditions!! Ahhh.....

Sheila, that is very intesting that you homeschool too! Do you enjoy it?
How were you able to arrange to take band but not actually go to school there? Of course, I couldn't do it anyway because there is no way my parents would drive me into town every day because I live out in the country. Plus I love my homeschool band!

Well, I just asked, and they said that I could be enrolled for just their band class. I'm not sure how it works with puclick schools, cuz this school is 60% private. Lets say the band class starts at 1:45 on tuesdays and thursdays, Thats when I would go. I'm really glad too, cuz I have an AWSOME teacher, and The one they had the year before I started there was not so good. Anyway, thats my story.

About that sax thing, my band teacher mentioned exactly that when she took a look at my possible clarinets. I'm not too sure I want to start another instrument right now, but maybe another time, because the more instruments the better!

Tilmitt,
Oboe, huh? I tried to play the oboe once. It was tough! I want to take it up seriously sometime though. That's awesome that you can play all the instruments. Y'know... all the clarinets have exactly the same fingerings, as do the saxophones, so technically, if you can play one, you can play them all... so maybe we can all play more horns than we thought!

hey n_hanson12 i said it would be cool to be able to play all the woodwind instruments, not that i can!! I do however plan on getting an A clarinet and a cor anglais when i go to university so i'll be able to play 4 instruments then! Though A and Bb clarinet are pratically the same, the A is just a little longer.

OH!! I get it! Sorry for the mix-up, Tilmitt.
Oh, and Sheila... I meant that all the saxophones have the same fingerings. And that all the clarinets have the same fingerings. Not that both sax's and clarinets are the same. The families are the same. lol I guess I didn't put it exactly the right way! Sorry...

Heyyy there! I am a youngster as well! I'm 16, a junior in high school. Been playing for 8 years now.. Love it! I made all-state last year for the first time and am doing TMEA this year (texas music education association). I'm excited. Is anyone here from Texas? Possibly went to Texas All State this past year?

Hi! I was under 20 until a couple months ago. 21 now. I've been playing for 9-10 years since I was 11 or so (stellaroja, I can't believe you've been playing since you were 9!). The clarinet is the only serious instrument I play, but I also know piano, recorder, garden hose (don't ask...) and took a few lessons on guitar.
I'm looking for a college scholarship at USU (Utah) and just bought a nice new Yamaha Custom (I actually had the intention of buying an intermediate-level clarinet, but I liked that one so much I coudn't say no).
I started in 6th grade, and consistently got first chair until about 10th grade, when competition started getting much fiercer. I would like to learn other wind instruments, but I figure that if I try something new, that's just that much less time I'll have to improve my clarinet skill. Anyway, nice to meet y'all.
