 Merano clarinets

Hi Everyone,

I have a daughter who has been playing clarinet for three years and we were thinking of purchasing a new clarinet to replace the used one we originally bought.

During a random eBay search I found a Merano B-flat clarinet 2005 that is selling for $110 new. I have never heard of the brand and did not know what type quality she could expect from it. She is currently using a Bundy which has always produced above average sound.

I'm thinking that this might fall into the category of "Too good to be true!"

Anyone's thoughts on this instrument would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Chuck C.

Chuck,
Too good to be true is probably right and you might be wasting your money.
It would be wise to ask a repair tech what they think of it. Some cheap clarinets have cast keys that break when adjustment is attempted. You'll probably find out more with a search of this site.
Regards,
Hans

***Brand New Clarinet, any brand, for $110.00 (U.S.)... blah, blah, blah***

Too good to be true may apply to lye-soap, Chuck, but is definitely toooo good to be true where muscial instruments are concerned. Most repair persons, in my hometown anyway, will not touch such instrumets. The horns are cheaply made of inferior materials and poorly constructed as well. Such instruments will not stay in adjustment after they're serviced sooo... reputable shops cannot guarantee their work if they're foolish enough to accept them.

It's a throw-away item at best, with a re-sale/trade-in value of Zero.

You mention your daughter is playing a Bundy now. If it's a decent horn and it's lasted three years without servicing, you might do well to get a re-pad or general overhaul. If it's a decent instrument, you might also do well to trade it in on a new(er) 'name brand' clarinet with a proven track record.
