 Barrel Ideas for flat Leblanc

Hi--

I just got a Morgan RM-15 for my c. 1960's Leblanc Symphonie III, and the mouthpiece is wonderful. But--I'm playing between -10 and -20 cents flat on most notes. Does anyone have any suggestions for brands of barrels to try so as to get the instrument up to pitch? The barrel I'm using appears to be the original, which I'm assuming is a 67mm, but I'm not sure how to determine this. (What does that number correspond to, anyway? Certainly not length...)

By the way, I'm playing Vandoren Blue Box 2.5s with the Optimum Lig.

Thanks.

Dave

Suggestions about which barrel LENGTHS to try would be very helpful, as well.

I have a 62.6 mm barrel that came with a Bb Symphonie that I bought on eBay last winter. You want to be sharp, that will do it and I'll sell it to you cheap. The Symphonie is still a bit sharp (~1mm) with my Symphonie II A barrel which is 67 mm. There is a guy on eBay:

mark weinstein

selling 66mm LL barrels for cheap and I have one, they work OK on the Bb Symphonie but are sharp too. Unfortunately I don't know if LL barrels work on Symphonie IIIs. You might try to contact him.

Maybe I should get a Morgan RM-15 as my Clarion HS* or Selmer crystal #2 are always sharp.

I just did a quick little experiment with open G on the Bb Symphonie.
The 62.6 mm Symphonie barrel is 40 sharp
The 66 mm LL barrel is 20 sharp
The 67 mm A barrel is 10 sharp
all done with the Selmer #2 crystal

you don't even know you should ask.

I was just able to borrow a Morgan RM-15 and now my Symphonie with a 66 mm LL barrel is about 1/2 cents flat. Unfortunately, I don't like the mouthpiece. A Sumner Acousticut #3 plays pretty much in tune too with that barrel.

Most Leblanc LL barrels I have seen are typically 65-66mm although using a VD A1 crystal these make my instruments rather flat until really fully warmed up and I generally use 64 - 64.5mm barrels in cooler weather.

Actually I traded that Symphonie and barrel to my tech for an overhaul and re-plating on a LL. He loved the horn and the short barrel, but he's a sax player.

Pull your barrel until the clarinet is playing another 10-cents flat and note the gap. That will give you an idea of how sensitive the instrument is to barrel length and give a hint on how much shorter you'd want your barrel to be.

Allen -- Your Link "www.chedevillemp.com/barrel/" gives an error...

just go to "www.chedevillemp.com" and then look at barrels.

PS: Both the Chedeville Prime MP and Barrel are exceptional items. They really produce a smooth, warm tone. They also tuned up my LeBlanc Bliss L310 NS to less than 10 cents on either side. They are extremely free blowing.

Thank you all for all answers.

Bob: thats a great hint!

In fact my clarinet (Evette & Schaeffer K series year 1974) plays perfectly well all pushed at 440.

Now, in Europe band I need a 443-4 and will need a shorter barrel. Bought one yesterday in Ebay UK a used Selmer 10 S 62,5mm... Lets see what happens. It was before reading to BobĀ“s advice.

Dont want to expend hundreds $ since one barrel can fit to a horn and not to another one. I am lost in a small town and cant order in France "barrels" to try. Only posibility is buying Moennig made in France but sold in Germany (LoL)

ah: www.chedevillemp.com I cant see prices... and barrels start at 66
its a problem in web site, or doesnt fits well with my mac?

OK Thanks for the heads up.
I fixed it.
Omar (Dr. Henderson of DoctorsProducts) added some info to the webpages, so the url is slightly different.

In any event, the OP has lots of options.
