I had to back off the Ab adjustment screw on my R13 completely below the tapped hole in the pivot arm itself in order to allow the Ab pad to seat firmly. I am aware that as the Ab pad is decreasing in thickness and I will eventually have to install a thicker Ab pad in order to allow the pad to seat properly and to readjust the screw to suit. I am not yet having any problem with the throat tones to speak of. I didnt want to do any bending but the adjustment screw is worthless at this point. Is there any suggestions for an easy fix or should I wait until I start having tone problems and eventually take it in for a repadding?

It sounds as if:
1. the 2 pads concerned have been installed with very uneven projection form the key cups, the Ab projecting a lot more than the A, or the A pad too thick.
2. The Ab key has been bent. This could happen by a knock to the area near the head of the screw.
3. The A key has been bent. This could happen if both the key cup and the 'touch piece' were squeezed simultaneously.
4. The geometry of these keys was poor right from manufacture.
Correction is by bending keys, removing metal from the lower end of the female thread, removing metal from the screw's contact point on the A key, &/or matching pad thickness appropriately. But perhaps I have missed something, the time here being 4:25 am.

Thanks for your suggestions Gordan. I think now that I better understand the important mechanics of the A & Ab pad thickness relation to each other. Upon further observation it looks like the Ab key adjusting screw would have the proper play and adjustment necessary if the Ab pad was thicker. That would raise the arm higher and at the same time give the necessary play beneath the arm to use the adjustment screw to seat the A pad properly. Although I am not sure if the thicker Ab pad would cure the problem and/or prevent the pad from raising enough to obtain a clear Ab tone or something worse! To remove metal is also a good suggestion that may be worth trying. At least I will now be more knowledgeable when tone problems occur. Thanks. ATV

I just finished adjusting that {vunerable} "clearamce" screw on both an R 13 and Symp Leblanc, providing each with a slight bit of "knock" [my terminology, the A begins to open slightly before the G# begins to open] so there is no G#-opening problem even with temp. change. Kinda like insurance?? Don

Perhaps the problem is not that you need a thicker Ab, but that you need a thinner A.
Metal removal is a common fix, but I hate removing metal except as a last resort.
Another reason you want to go thinner on the A if possible has to do with venting issues.
A thicker Ab decreases your venting which can lead to all sorts of tuning and tonal problems.
If you are playing a high quality instrument like that, you owe it to yourself to have a top notch repair person check it and voice it for you. Odds are if you are having that problem, you have other issues that you do not know about.
Good luck!

This is somewhat related to this thread, does anyone know of a supplier of plastic G# adjustment screws? Occassionally one of my students manages to lose one. I called Ferrees, they didnt know where to get the plastic ones I see on most of the student horns lately.
I also need the plastic tabs on the lower ends of the left side lower joint levers - found on some E11's and R13's. I've had students manage to break off a few of those as well. Dunno how they manage to do it, the kids amaze me sometimes.

Paul,
Both of the items you ask about are available from the Music Group. Give Laurie a call@800-426-7068 X441. Ask for B129 adjusting screw and B133 key connector.
