 What Is This?

This came with a Buffet B-12 I had ages ago, and I just found it again and remembered I still had no idea what it was. If you can't make out the picture, let me know -- I have a couple others. I just want to know what it is. It's been puzzling me for years!

It's a key clamp which is used to hold the left pinky E/B key down while the clarinet is being shipped, or taken from from one place to another...GBK

It looks like something that you plug into the top of the lower section.
The wing part of it, I presume, is spring loaded, and is used to hold down the e/B lever. This keeps 2 normally-open pads closed while the instrument is in the case. The intention is to ensure that these two pads remain seating well.

That's great to know. I had just been stairing at that for ages in my case. Anyone know at what point they started to put those in. Or maybe it isn't included w/ R13s. Many of the teachers I ask (one played an R13 and one a prestiege) Thanks again to Gordon and GBK and to Camanda for asking.

This is far more exciting to me then I thought it would be, heh.

I saw the Buffet key clamp advertised as "new" - maybe 2 years ago in the Muncy Winds catalog. One of the local technicians I know started stocking them soon afterwards.

Last time I looked, I think they were going for about $9. A cheap alternative is to use an elastic hairband and wrap it over the left hand spatula keys and underside of the lower joint. Fits nicely and serves the same purpose as the key clamp.

The key clamps are included (for free) with the student line Buffet clarinets.

However, many (less than honest) dealers remove them to sell as an individual accessory.

At $7 to $9 apiece, it's a nice bit of extra pocket change for them...GBK

"The key clamps are included (for free) with the student line Buffet clarinets."

Is that because the more expensive models have their pads adjusted properly to seal!

I suppose it is cheaper for the manufacturer to supply that band-aid than it costs to adjust correctly.

The R13 i brought in Janruary 2004 and a friends R13 brought at the end of 2002 both came with the key clamp.

I wouldn't be surprised. The pad on the key the clamp was apparently for ended up falling off several times.

Like the magnetic key clamping system Selmer Paris provides with saxophones that have not been adjusted. Hmmm.

The band-aids are no substitute for doing the job properly in the first place.
