Finally I got to meet one of my soulmates on this board. jez and myself were both playing at the Proms Festival at the Royal Albert Hall so we decided to meet. Great music, great company and lots of beer. Life is wonderful.
On Monday jez is beginning his big cross country tour of Britain from north to south on a bicycle to celebrate his birthday. Good tour jez! I hope it's not gonna be a pain in the a**.

I'm afraid not. I usually play Eb but I played all the rest of the program so the assistant pricipal played the second part with Eb this time. Also, I was playing BBb contra in the first piece. I find it a bit risky to combine the two of them in the same program so I had a beer while the rest were putting another nail into their coffins.

This concert was broadcasted last thursday on Swiss radio and I had planned to listen to it but forgot to do it in the end.
What a pity I missed the chance to listen to a "bulletin-boarder" playing live on air...

From a quick glance at the program notes, that piece with the contrabass clarinet sounds interesting...
Can you tell us any more about it?

It's called 'Exquisite Corpse' and written by Anders Hillborg. Anders Hillborg is one of 4-5 Swedish composers today who are internationally well-known.
Besides what's written in the notes on the link below it's hard to describe with words. The soft opening is quite difficult since the B flats travelling between the high winds and the violins have to be performed with exactly pure intonation or the effect is lost. The same goes for the following minor seconds. Everything has to be without interference but absolutely still. Tempo in the beginning is 50bpm and accelerates soon up to 150bpm. This happens twice.
In one section it has quick passages that are taken over from one player to the other and this demands severe concentration.
Later on it has quotations from Stravinsky and Sibelius behind a curtain of strings. The end is a shiny revelation like spherical motif in the upper strings that stops very suddenly, like waking up from a beautiful dream and the room is silent.
It's a demanding piece in every sense of the word but very fun to play. Things are difficult but not impossible to play. It's one of the better new pieces for orchestra that I have played. Like his 'Liquid Marble' this piece is going to send echo over the world.

Hey Alphie ... make sure you encourage your wonderful orchestra to undertake a South-east Asian tour and come to the Opera House, in Sydney while you're at it.

I wish! I've already played in THE Opera House a few times already and wouldn't mind to come back one more time before I turn in for good. The closest I'll come this year is Japan in September.

Alphie ... nice programme by the way ... I adore Stenhammar, especially his wonderful Excelsior! ... it's just a thrilling piece. How would I obtain a copy of the orchestral score, any clues? (legally of course).

You can get a score of the 'Excelsior' from the sales manager Susanne Suttner at STIM. STIM is the organisation for protection and copyright of Swedish music.
Some music by Stenhammar is not published but only copied from the original score. It's a copy like this you'll receive.
Send an e-mail to: <susanne.suttner@stim.se> and place your order.

Good luck,

I listened to the concert live on Radio 3 (live here in UK) and they sounded great, really enjoyed the Sibelius VLN Concerto. Well Done!
