Isn't alla breve cut time? That would be two beats per measure and the half note gets a beat. Just think of it as playing it in double time. That's probably not the correct way to think about it, but that's how I do it and I'm doing pretty darn good.

Choose a tune that you know in 4/4 (common) time and play it as you would normally, four beats to the measure, quarter getting the count and tapping your foot on each quarter beat. BRAVO!!!! Now play it again at the same speed (tempo) but only tap your foot on beats one and three instead of all four. SHAZZAMMM!!!! You are now playing in alla breve (cut) time. Alla breve is more ofter called "cut" time and is written as a C with a vertical line bisecting it fom top to bottom, or as 2/2 time. Alla breve = cut time = 2/2 time: two beats to the measure, the half-value gets the beat.
