I recently had a Bb soprano clarinet repadded but am now having problems with playing the instrument again. When the instrument is being played a whistling noise is emitted from the A/Ab pads. I'm not sure what the cause is (whether the pad isn't seated low enough onto the hole or whether the spring needs more tension?). Does anyone know a tip or two about what I could do to fix it?

1. Pads not seated correctly
2. Spring tension not firm enough
3. Ab adjustment screw tightened too far in
4. A or Ab pad too thick/ too thin
5. Skin of pad torn
Any or all of the above...GBK

Could also be a tiny piece of dirt or lint. Open the key and blow under the pad or put a tissue between the pad and the tonehole, do *not* add any pressue to the key while gently pulling the tissue out. If the tissue is not strong enough, use a dollar bill.

Try carrying out the leak test mentioned in "help with an old leblanc ".
It could also be:
5. Rusted pivot.
6. Bent pivot tube.
7. Throat A key spring pushing up against a tiny wall of timber that has been worn at the end of the spring.
8. Unsuitable or poorly installed throat A spring.
9. A chip in the edge of a tone hole.
10. A split across a tone hole.
11. Rust where the throat Throat A spring contacts a tiny piece of metal on the body.
12. Throat A spring needs lubricant and is the sort of set up that needs it.
.......
.......
It just goes on and on. Diagnosis is pretty difficult without the instrument at hand!

Did the whistling noise occur before or after the repading? If all else fails take it back to the tech that did the repading and let them correct the problem.
