Does anyone know of a resource to find out information on clarinet makers. I am trying to find out information about a clarinet marked La Barre Artiste. It's a wooden clarinet probably an intermedite level instrument. Thank you, Alden

The New Langwill which Mark looked into is prob. the most comprehensive. In "The Clarinet" by F G Rendall 1954 and 1971 editions, library no. 788.6 Ren, there are substantial lists of makers and of "names". Also Grove's "Dictionary of Music ---" is a fine source for musical research . Beyond those, most reference sections of even small libraries have a number of books on musical subjects of all kinds. Happy hunting! Don

I looked in my Rendall and Brymer for Barre and LaBarre,[and will look in Grove] no mention. There is, of course, the Barret [sp?] action [keying for oboe mid staff Bb and C] which is usual on modern oboes etc, and has been applied to some early clarinets. I would guess your cl was made by one of the many small Fr makers. Don
