 Eddie Daniels recommendation?
Author: David Peacham

I don't listen to much jazz, but I gather I ought to listen to this guy.

What record would you recommend for starters? Preferably one of those readily available from amazon.co.uk: a lot of his records are on long delivery times or are plain unavailable.

If there are so many people on this board unwilling or unable to have a civil and balanced discussion about important issues, then I shan't bother to post here any more.

To the great relief of many of you, no doubt.

Unfortunately, that's one that falls into the "long delivery time" category.

Eddie's 1985 album "Breakthrough" is essential to hear. It is now quite difficult (but not impossible) to find.

Next, listen to his take on Charlie Parker classics on "To Bird With Love"

Finally, although Eddie on plays on only 2 of the tracks, I urge you to listen to the GRP All Star Band:

It is an album that I guarantee you will play over and over again. Lots of big name players all in their prime...GBK

"Swing Low," his big band album is very good. It's recorded with the HR Big Band in Germany, which swings harder than a lot of American bands do. This is probably my favorite ED album - it seems like it has something for everyone from the Goodman imitations right down to Mr. Daniel's own unique and instantly recognizable sound.

"This Is Now" (less readily available) is good as well and has some shining examples of what he can do with Thad Jones material. He played in Thad and Mel's band for a number of years playing tenor, flute, and clarinet for them, and it comes off in his writing.

'The Five Seasons' is wonderful.
Somebody recommended his recording with Sabine Meyer, but I couldn't find it.

Hi,

GBK has it right with Breakthorugh and To Bird with Love (one of my very favorites). There is one cut of Soon on a Dave Grusin Gershwin album that is really nice.

Also, the Benny rides Again with Gary Burton is a fine disk as well.

PS There is a cut somewhere of Just Friends but I can't remember where? Senior Moment!

I have most of Eddie Daniels' cd's, including that old demo someone put out of him playing bass clarinet, flute, clarinet, tenor, etc.etc.etc., but the one I recommend most often, particularly to non-jazz people, is "Beautiful Love," which is mostly ballads in a "smooth-jazz" vein (except, of course, it's Eddie, and also Chuck Loeb on guitar, so there's nothing remotely tossed-off or "smooth-jazz-cliched" about it).

So that's my recommendation--at least until Eddie does an all-bass-clarinet album (which would be a slice of heaven!)

Why not try checking out Eddie's neat website at:

<www.eddiedanielsclarinet.com>

He has some MP3 files you can listen to, and a complete discography.
Good luck,
