 Tremolo fingerings
Author: Melissa

I'm playing the 2nd clarinet part to Johan De Meij's The Hobbit. There is one tremolo that goes from A4-C#5 (second space A to 3rd space C). At the moment I'm playing it with the regular A fingering and then I am trilling with the first two side trill keys with the register key. It's pretty awkward, plus it's not even the right pitch (the closest I could come up with). Do any of you know of another way to play this tremolo?

Play the C#5 with the regular fingering (either right or left pinky - it doesn't matter), BUT with the 1st finger of your left hand also open the throat A key (while still keeping your finger covering the 1st LH hole).

Now...tremolo by using your 1st finger in the right hand ...GBK

Ok, I tried that but it is sounding as if I'm trilling from A to A# (a very flat A# but still sharper than A). I can hear very faintly underneath the C#. Is there a trick to getting the C# to sound?

First - to get used to this variation of fingerings:

Try the A4 to B4 trill: Play B with the throat A key opened (while still covering the first LH hole). Trill the 1st finger of the right hand.

Try the A4 to C5 tremolo: Play the C with the throat A key opened (while still covering the first LH hole). Tremolo with the 1st finger of the right hand.

The A4 to C#5 tremolo follows the same procedure as above.

These fingerings work on Bb clarinet. On the A clarinet they are less successful ...GBK
