 Songs of the Galaxies

The New York Times has a geeky article that refers to notes that are produced by black holes and are propagated across galaxies. (Free registration required to access the Times site). Hey contra players, can you produce a Bb 57 octaves below middle C?!

So is that a large-bore or small-bore black hole? If you put a Backun bell on it, will that low Bb be more in tune? I was thinking of buying a pair of black holes myself but I don't know what brand to buy. Any recommendations?

Gosh, 57 octaves down, one pulse every eon?? Aren't the bottom notes of the contra bass sax and clarinet, and BIG tubas/ string basses approaching the "PAIN" [in]frequencies? Our ears, and body in general, can only withstand low intensitiy sonic vibraion. I recall the painful character of automobile "cabin" vibration from driving with one window down, 2 or 3 pulses per second?, Hertz hurts! Don

Thanx, Mark, Don

57 Octaves ... hmm ... that's not "pitch" in human terms for sure ... interesting article, however, thanks Phat Cat.

I thought the 64 foot Contratrombone on the Sydney Town Hall Organ was low enough for my likes ... the effect being a manic clapping, really.

Anyone else live in a city with a behemoth pipe organ in possession of a 64 foot stop?

If you want the standard setup, go for your basic pair of active galaxies--seyfert Is usually work best for most people, but you might be more comfortable with seyfert IIs or BL Lacs instead. Whatever works best for you--however experimentation can be tricky due to the need to put your ligature on inside the event horizon of the central supermassive black hole--once it's on, it's not going to come off, so you probably don't want to use your favorite lig. until you're certain what you want. Once you've chosen your pair, be prepared to have a mouthpiece and good reed for each blackhole, since the gravitational pull inside the event horizon can make fast changes *really* tough.

The real problem with going this route, however, is the shipping--they can't do rush shipments, and most companies are really funny about the insurance they'll require before they even think of agreeing to take the shipment. This is going to add onto the price considerably, unfortunately.

And I can't believe I just wrote that. :-)

I don't live there, but the only other Organ in the world with a 64' reed is the Convention Hall Organ in Atlantic City USA. I don't know if it is working though since much of the Convention Hall organ is inoperable, which is a real shame.

Back in 1619, Johannes Kepler claimed, in Harmony of the World, a relationship between the motions of the six planets and music.
He claimed that they expressed the clefs, major and minor scales, individual tones, and harmonies. He ascribed the four voices of soprano, contralto, tenor, and bass to them and wrote out tunes that they supposedly played. Perhaps he was right all along.
