 Hindemith Quintet/Quartet
Author: theclarinetist

Last night while looking around on the internet, I found a recording Hindemith's quintet and quartet for clairnet. This was the first time I had seen these pieces recorded or even heard of them.

Considering that the Hindemith Sonata and Concerto are relatively well known in the clarinet rep, is there a reason the quartet/quintet seem more obscure? I'm not sure they're obscure, but I've wasted enough of my life searching for clarinet CDs on the web that I thought I would have come across them earlier if they were well-known. Just curious. I'd like to get them if they're worthwhile...

Paul Hindemith wrote a small amount of music for clarinet and others: I've played the concerto (not with orchestra, and the sonata) the other works I've listed I only know by reputation, not having seen the scores. The quintet is delightful.

Sonata for Clarinet and Piano (1939)

Quintet for Clarinet and String Quartet Op. 30 (1923, revised 1954)

Two Duets for Violin and Clarinet from the Music Day at Plön (1932)

12 Variations for Clarinet and Strings from the Music Day at Plön (1932)

Quartet for Clarinet, Violin, Cello, and Piano (1938)

Check out John Bruce Yeh's new recording of these pieces and others on the Cedille label. Worth a listen.

Cool. I think that's the one I saw online, actually...

I just received the CD of Jon Bruce Yeh doing the Hindemith chamber music. Never heard the quintet before. It's the best recording of all the Hindmith I have. The quintet should be more well known. Definitely worth the listen.
