Hey guys
I'm a student and I rent with friends, some don't do music and some do (at the same uni as me). It's a BIIIIIG 7-bedroom house, and with one clarinetist, 2 sopranos, one drummer, and a 'pop' vocalist come singing teacher, it gets pretty full-on.
Howver, from about 2am until about 1pm the next day, the house falls SILENT. Everyone is asleep and a lot of the time, I want to get up early and start playing, usually at about 10 or 11-ish.
I KNOW I'll wake them up, but, is it unreasonable to play at such a time, considering the day is already half-over? I mean it would be fine if they woke me up at 10, because I know it's late morning and I know what they need to do - but they never have.
Anyone else been in a silimar situation? What can I do?

Go to the basement or go to the practice rooms at your university. That is, if you don't want to have your clarinet permanently installed somewhere uncomfortable.

You can ask them to sit down with you to discuss it. Present it as a problem and ask for help in finding a solution.
In the worst case your friends can't/won't agree to change their routines to accommodate you.
In the best case they'll find a way to compromise and meet your needs, say every other day or so.

I think it would be best if you went into your institution's practice rooms.
Alternately you can practice playing a consistent sound at a very low volume making sure all your support is there and not biting too much.
If you want to blow more air through the instrument take an old reed and put it way too high on the mouthpiece and and play normally. The notes shouldn't speak but you will be able to practice technical passages like this. A metronome is a loud device so if you have earphones for it use them or otherwise wrap it in a sock or something...
I live in a unit with two common walls which you can easily hear most things through (unfortunately...) and this works for me. As to the actual benefit of this sort of practice you will have to be the judge!

So "10 or 11-ish" is early???? But then I guess if you don't go to bed until 2 am.....
No wonder no one ever signed up for my 10 am classes. I am really getting old (up at 6 to 7 am each day) :-).

I'd try asking them individually if they would have any objection to you practicing at 11 AM each day, starting with the person you think is most likely to object. One person objecting sends you to the school's practicee rooms.

Another option is this:
Just start practicing at 7am. If anyone objects, then you can generously compromise by agreeing to practice at 10am. Everyone will love you for your flexibility and consideration. You'll be the house hero. There is also a chance that they'll be so impressed by your dedication to practicing at such an early hour that they won't complain about it at all.

I was going to post a nice off-topic subject on this, but I'll say it here since GBK brought it up...
I just bought a house! I closed on Tuesday and moved in today. A flutist friend of mine will be renting from me when her lease is up at the end of September. The house has a wonderful little room off of the dining room that I'll use to teach at home!!! Yay! And I'll be able to rehearse and both my friend and I will be able to practice whenever we wish because we know it won't bother the other!
A house is HIGHLY recommended!
