 Buffet Continentale... and not breakfast

Last year I bought a Buffet Continentale (not to be confused with the free breakfast bar offered at hotels) A clarinet for about $700. First, is that a good deal?

I found a lot of info on it when I looked up its history. It seems like back in the 60's, before Boosey bought Buffet, the owner Marty Tolchin decided to come out with various pro horns. This created the Continentale, BC-20, S-1, R-13 and Super-Dyaction.

The guy who owned this horn last, etched a seriel number in it (I guess from his Bb horn). Can that be removed or filled in by a tech? Also, the clarion B natural and C are super duper flat, which I think is similar to the problem with Buffet's As, along with being stuffy. Can that be worked somehow to play in tune?

With the clarinet, came two barrels. Did they include 2 barrels when they sold the horn back in the day? The catch with two barrels... they are both 66mm, which doesn't help my flat situation! But even with a 65mm, the clarion is out of tune.

Is there hope for my Doughnut? (That is what I named it)

Not the R-13 - that was 1954-55

Contragirl,

A good tech should be able to buff that serial number off and wax in a finish to match. As for the flatness, mention it to a reliable tech-maybe they can raise some keys to raise the pitch. Or as a last resort, they can do some gradual undercutting of the tone holes. I know a good tech in MD, if you need a referral.

$700 for a used A clainet doesn't sound bad-as long as you are happy with it! I got a used vintage Leblanc A for around $600, and it suits me just fine.

I think I met you thru David Spiegelthal at ClarinetFest. Did you play the rosewood contrabass in the college choir?

Actually, my friend Patrick played the rosewood contra. I played the big metal straight model contrabass. Me and my friends monopolized the low woodwind section in the college choir. My friend Chris played contrabass along with me, my friend Patrick played the contralto, and his girlfriend played bass clarinet.

The Terps representin' the bass!
