I ran into a picture of what looked like a standard Bb or A soprano clarinet this morning, except that there appeared to be seven joints, excluding the mpc and bell. There was a silver band around the circumference of the instrument (as if indicating a joint) at a point midway between the register vent and the thumb key, another one between rings 1 and 2, and a third one between ring 2 and the tonehole at 3. Thus, what would normally be a single top joint was split into unequal thirds. Is it just me, is this just a nonstandard way of slowing cracks, or is it overkill?

Sounds as if the clarinet was flush banded as a repair for multiple upper joint cracks (or one very long crack) ...GBK

I agree, I have a 2 banded. and "pinned" U J Bb cl, which is quite tight, almond etc oiling helps. On a cracked barrel, I put a strip of black tape over its crack, its nearly invisible and seals quite well. However, I prefer non-cracked horns ! Don

I saw what was probably the same picture. The one I saw was definitely flushbands used for crack repair. It must have been a whopper. Doesn't mean clarinet doesn't work OK now, but it sure detracts from appearance and resale value.

I'm under the impression that flushbanding is an older process compared to pinning....is that so? Also, forgetting cost, is flushbanding superior?

So this poor thing was addicted to crack? And I thought ringworm...had a course of sulfur ointment planned out.
Don, I believe I'll start carrying a roll of duct tape with me. I guess you can fix anything with it--except ducts.
I am curious about the process of flushbanding. Is a straight piece of silver wrapped around the circumference and soldered, or does the technician have to slip a pre-formed band over the bore, removing all obstacles (like key posts) to get to the vicinity of the crack, then swage it in place?
