I was wondering if anyone knew anything about the International Music Camp on the border of North Dakota and Canada. My band is planning on taking up those whoe are interested, driving from here in Colorado.
Any input would be appreciated,
Kristen

Kristen--As a clarinet instructor at IMC, I have had students from all over the world--in particular, some very talentled and advanced young clarinetists from Spain, Luxumborge, Romania and Switzerland. You will perform in large and small groups, have sectional and private lessons, as well as daily theory classes for beginning as well as advanced music students. Placement in groups is done by audition on the day that you arrive, so have a solo prepared as well as all major and minor scales and arpeggios (memorized is recommended). You will have some "social" time for some non-musical activities (dance, freeby, soccer and sight-seeing), but most of your time will be spent in rehersals, sectionals and other classes that you sign up for. The weather can be either nice (sunny, 70's) or unseasonalbly cool (40's) with rain. Try to bring a good supply of reeds, etc and make certain that your instrument is in top working condition---the closest music store is in Minot, ND--about an hour away. If you hve any special music (solos, ensembles) that you would like to work on, bring them along. For the final concerts, white shirts and ties are recommended, as I recall. Otherwise, dress is pretty casual around camp and in keeping with the often unpredictable weather. In short, be prepared for an intense musical experiance of "international" preportion. As an instructor, I have always left camp totally exhausted but always looking forward to my next visit--we meet some of the nicest and most talented students in the world, and that is a real treat for any teacher!!! Good luck and enjoy!!!

That was a lot of fun! It's probably a lot less expensive too...but it's for the individual musician, not the whole band (but that most of my band was there because we are really close to CSU.)

FYI--If your school sends a complete band and gives a concert for the IMC camp, each member gets a reduced tuition for the session, I think half price. When I was there last, there was a band from Switzerland and an adult band from FonDulac, Wis. Also, there is a great band camp in Egg Harbor, Door County, Wis. called Birch Creek Music Academy. They have sessions for percussion, jazz, and orchestra where the participants (students) play concerts along with the instructors, who are mostly pros from the Chicago area. It is a performance oriented session each lasting two weeks and the main focus is rehersal and performance. Individual lessons are available upon request. They have a website under Birch Creek.

Really? Are you from Colorado? I came from California to that camp. That was a lot of fun. I was the 4th clarinet in the 1st clarinet section in the honor band. Wow. It's a small world.

I guess it's a small world after all! You came from California? Wow! That's along way to go for music camp! Sorry, I must live 20 minutes from the campus. Anyway, I could go into detail and ask you a bunch of stupid questions, but I won't.
