 Help!
Author: Bani

Dear all,
I need some help. By mistake I recently bought a music book which I thought was clarinet but turns out to be for tenor sax. My question is: are the notes for tenor sax the same as for clarinet? If not how do I transpose them?
I know clarinet notes should be one tone higher than piano notes to be in tune. Is it the same for tenor sax? Will appreciare any help.
Thanks very much.

Read the tenor notes as they are. Tenor sax and bass clarinet usually read the same music in concert band. Tenor's in the key of Bb...and so are we. Just to be 100% sure the music is OK, check the clef. I don't know what clef tenor saxes read from. I'm almost certain they read treble, as we also do.

Why can't you return the book and exchange it for clarinet instead?
I do believe that tenor sax is in Bb also... So, don't worry bout it...

Hi Mary,
Thanks for your reply. I was actually planning on doing that (exchanging the book) but have been too busy. Now I don't have to. Thanks again.

Yeah, they read Treble. Plenty of pep band games where I played Tenor Sax parts on my bass confirm this.

As the colleagues allready replied there is no significant difference.
You will not be employing the lowest clarinet register from e-b, because the lowest note on the sax is Bb, and on the clarinet one 5th lower, but that should not bother you.

The Bb Soprano Clarinet is an octive higher than the Bb Tenor Saxophone.

Before you settle on this book, you might still consider exchanging it. As it is, the musical context will cater to the tenor saxophone's range. The clarinet can play lower (written pitches) and is generally written in a wider, more generous range. What is the book for? If it is just for your own amusement, then the exchange is a small issue, but if you are wanting to use it seriously or with other musicians, you probably should exchange it for the correct book for your particular instrument.

Hi Davor,
Yes, I've already found that out. In fact most of the pieces in this book have notes higher than F on the upper/higher octave. Quite challenging for me.
Thanks for your input.

Hi K. Denny,
This book (Disney Solos 2 which includes: Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, Toy Story 2, etc). is only for my personal use so no worries. But you're right, I'll make sure to get the right book (for clarinet) next time. Thanks a lot.
