 New Mouthpieces

I want to purchase a new mouthpiece and everyone has been recommending the Vandoren B-45. How much do these mouthpieces cost? Can I get a good deal online? Also, if anyone could recommend other good quality mouthpieces for an intermediate player (I've been playing about 5 years) I would appreciate it. I'm basically looking for a mp that will give my clarinet a better tone and eveness. =)

Check the Resources/Retail section here on Sneezy.

I'd suggest you try a number of mouthpieces in your price range. The mail-order places will allow you to try out a few at a time (make sure you use a plastic or cloth ligature or tape to avoid scratches - and watch out that the screw doesn't dig in!). There are other people (such as Gregory Smith) who don't sell via mail order. You can contact them via their addresses on that same page or go to the Mouthpieces section under the Equipment section to get the names & addresses.

Perhaps Mark, it may be more accurate to say that my mouthpieces are offered via mail order but directly from my home studio (or by appointment here in Evanston). They are not available through mail order retailers such as Woodwind and Brasswind, International Musical Suppliers, Muncy, Weiner, etc. Thanks for mentioning it though...

Try the LeBlanc K-10 or Legend series. The Larry Combs #3 is also a medium priced mp that usually works ok. Try before you buy--all mps play a bit differently, even models of the same make. For "expensive" professional, mps, both Richard Hawkins and Greg Smith make good ones, but even those may vary in playing characteristics from one to another.

There are some other custom brands of mp, usually pretty pricey, though. Quality components, quality workmanship, yields a quality price. However, from what I have seen and heard, the price is well worth it.

If you do get a Vandoren B45, make sure the lay is perfectly flat. Have a good tech take a look at it and check it out for you if you can. The mass produced mps are good, but the quality of the materials and the workmanship are reflected in their price. You can find a good price on Vandoren mps from many of the reputable e-tailers out there.

Many of the custom mp makers (such as Mr. Smith) prefer a more direct relationship with their customers. Based on my personal experience with a domestic US custom mp maker, I personally believe that the direct relationship is the best. I gave the custom maker my personal specifications and expectations and he created a pro grade mp just for me. It plays great and sounds terrific. It had better sound great for the price I paid. Now, I have a pro grade horn from tip to toe.
