This question has no answer. Both of them (plus Selmer and Yamaha and the custom makers) are top notch. Every player will have their own preference so if you are in the market for an instrument, try several of each model (there is some variance between individual instruments even of the same model).
When you are trying out instruments, make sure they are comparable. Do not compare an intermediate to a pro. Do not compare a pro grade to a premium grade. As an example, here is what you should compare. I will only use Buffet & Leblanc but you should also try the similar Selmer and Yamaha.
Buffet B-12 vs Leblanc Vito
Buffet E-11 vs Leblanc Noblet 40
Buffet E-13 vs Leblanc Noblet 45 or perhaps Leblanc Sonata
Buffet R-13 vs Leblanc Infinity or perhaps Leblanc Eternite
Note that many people compare the Leblanc Opus or Concerto to the R-13 but this is not a valid comparison as the Opus & Concerto fall in the category of premium pro instruments rather than standard pro instruments and it is unfair to compare the R-13 to them. However Buffet also makes premium pro instruments.
By the way, I happen to be a fan of the Leblanc instruments but that is merely my personal preference.

I'm sure it's an honest question, but one that has no answer. We might be able to come up with a list of the <i>worst</i> clarinets, but not the best!
Too bad I can't ban this (along with "best mouthpice", "best reed", "best Barrel", etc.) question and do an automatic referral to all the discussions that have gone on in the past!

I am sorry if I didn't "follow procedure". I posted a reply and when I checked to see if it was there it never appeared so I didn't think it worked. (Mabey a Y2K glitch?) Sorry. And I am a college student that has played both leblancs and buffets and I firmly believe that you get a better tone from a leblanc than from a buffet. I play a Sonata and I have for the past 5 years and I like the tone from that horn much better than from my R-13. That is my opinion and next time you have a comment to make to me I would appreciate it if you would e-mail me directly instead of publically "smacking the back of my hand". Thanks you

if you want to end the topic because it has no "answer" then you should do that before these kinds of questions get out of hand. I am sorry that I offered my opinion to you at all..I was simply making a comment and I didn't know that all comments on this board had to be carefully researched ahead of time before they could be posted.In the future before I offer my opinion I will make sure that I research anything so as not to offend you or Dee.I didn't know it was wrong to just shout out a cheer for your favorite clarinet.

Well since all I've seen is fans of Selmer and Leblanc, I guess I'll just have to add my little bit of 2 cents...Joey I enjoy playing on a Buffet..I played a Leblanc all through high school, but when I got to college I searched for the instrument that would get me through at least 4 years of playing...after trying Sel. LeB. and Yam. I decided to go with the Buffet R-13...I liked the tone of the instrument and quite frankly the "feel" or "action" of the keys...It has a great "cheap" price and is a fantastic horn compared to anything anyone else has to offer (probaly at half the price)...but hey this is just my opinion...Ya gotta go out and try all the horns you can get your hands on...Happy hunting!

Eight years ago, I switched to LeBlanc Concertos after having played Buffet R-13s since college. I am still "on the fence" as to which is "the best." My Concertos are better in tune and have a more even scale than do my Buffets (thanks to Tom Ridenour's excellant tweeking)--but I still prefer the sound of a good Buffet to that of the LeBlanc. FYI--I recently played on a Louis Rossi A American bore grendilla which was excellant--sound, scale, etc. Next, I hope to be able to try a Bb and if it is as good as the A, I might mortgage my house and buy a set. That would add a whole new demension to the "which one is best" controversy ( which is really unanswerable). Good luck.

Whose to determine which instrument is better without trying it first? Each brand is going to be equally as good, or better depending on the player. A player may like Leblanc more than a Buffet so all of these responses are obsolete! The player needs to play to find the best brand for him/her self to say which is better. I like Buffet a lot, but I can't say its the best because I haven't tried the other brands. In saying which is better, I don't really know!

excellent point kim! I agree with you. a person plays the instrument, the instrument does no9t play the person. I have always felt that way about anything in music. PEOPLE that use their instruments are musicians and too often we confuse people that use an instrument for musicians. There is a difference and many people don't realize it. So I say personally I like Leblanc's but ultimately it is up to the person.

Okay, so I have a personal preference for the look, sound, and feel for my own Buffet horn. That's because it's been regulated to my fingers and my style of playing. I'm sure if I took a long while and had more private lessons to get it thoroughly regulated, I could get just as accustomed to a LeBlanc, a Selmer, a Yamaha, or a Rossi. No horn is absolutely perfect right out of the box. I personally don't know of anyone (amateur or pro) who hasn't taken a long time to adjust to a new horn.
