My youth symphony (GMYS- www.gmys.org ) is planning on performing Bartok's Concerto for Orchestra ( I can't wait to see who will get the double reed positions after auditions next season) for one of our 04-05 concerts and so while I'd heard the piece before, I wanted to get recordings to study. I now like two- Chicago with Reiner and Philadelphia with Ormandy. After listening to Philadelphia and also now having a recording of them doing The Miraculous Mandarin I wanted to know who the clarinetists in the orchestra were at the time of the recordings- November 15th 1962 and October 13th, 1963 ( I assume the section was the same, but could be wrong). If anyone knows, please help me because my searches have failed. Thank you.

The Chicago principal clarinetist at the time of the Reiner recording was Clark Brody.
There's also a Szell/Cleveland recording , with, of course, Marcellus. It was criticized at the time it came out (shortly after the Chicago recording) because Szell make a 4-bar cut in the finale, but it's a great performance.

The original premiere recording is on Naxos with the Boston Symphony...not a bad record again with some weird cuts by Koussevitsky.
The Reiner is way beyond the Ormandy recording...I find Gigliotti rather good here but the CBS Philly Ormandy recording technique is not so great.
I always admire the Boston Kubelik lp on DG...never made it to CD however. Great woodwinds on that one.

Chicago might be my favourite orchestra from back then, but I don't like how their woodwind sections sound on those crucial parts. I don't like the overall sound of the orchestra- probably the venue they were recording in on the Philly recording as much as Chicago, in some places not nearly as much- but I feel the "little" things as far as expression goes is better carried out by Philadelphia, whether that was Ormandy or the musicians themselves. Don't mind me....I'm just a 15 year old- I still have so much to learn as far as recognizing a good recording, I mean I barely knew these pieces before I heard them on these CDs. Philadelphia just always seems like a more personal orchestra to me, like Cincinnati does when I compare them to Chicago, even if they're not as clean.
Thanks a lot...I can appreciate Gigliotti's artistry now (wasn't familiar with his orchestral stuff before).
