Check out the new Stereophile---there is a great article on recording K622 (Antony Michaelson). There is a picture of his clarinet with a brandy bottle nearby---the caption is ..."the brandy was used for soaking reeds, not for imbibing." Is this a joke?

I suppose the brandy would kill any bacteria in the reeds and give the reeds a nice fragrance.
It is unfortunate that liqueur contains so much sugar, otherwise a reed soaked in Parfait Amour liqueur would be an incentive to practise.

Soaking reeds in brandy?? I can just imagine at the next AA meeting--"Hello, my name is ____ _____ (your name) and I am a claraholic".
One way to minimize reed problems--at least in your own mind...........after one to many cool licks.

Since alcohol and water are miscible one would guess that the brandy would tend to dryout the reed....and leave sugar and a brandy taste behind. I do believe it's a cryptic joke...however.

All seriousness aside, re: soaking of reeds --- I usually keep a small vitamin bottle filled with water in each instrument case for soaking reeds, adding a drop or two of chlorine bleach in each bottle to retard mold growth --- this makes the reed taste a bit like swimming pool water (which essentially is what's in the bottle) but keeps the water usable for weeks. Not being a brandy drinker myself, I can't speak for it.........
