I was wondering if the Mozart Quintet, like the Concerto, was originally written for basset horn (or basset clarinet, whichever it is). If so, can someone recommend a decent recording? I love the Pay's recording of the Concerto on a period instrument. I already have a few recordings of the quintet done with regular A clarinets, but I bet one done on a period instrument would be very nice. Thanks

It was indeed intended for basset, but only in a very little part of the music do the notes dip below concert D, definately far less than the concerto. So a recording done on basset clarinet shouldn't sound too different.
Right now, the only places I recall are in the first movement's end...those times when we hear the long ascending and descending 8th note arpeggios... the first notes of many of those arpeggios are basset low notes.
Dieter Klocker might have done a recording with a basset...but don't quote me on that one.

Other places:
1st movement development -- the beginnings of several of arpeggios behind the descending sequences in the string parts.
2nd movement -- the ending -- definitely the ascending scale, C D E F at the very end, and, in my opinion, the figure just before it, where G Bb A G Bb D C should turn downward at the 5th note, G Bb A G F D C.
3rd movement -- second trio, ascending arpeggios start on low notes rather than downward triplets.
4th movement
-- variation 1 -- the big downward skips are usually (on basset clarinet) played an additional octave lower where possible, though I don't really like all of them this way.
-- variation 2 -- last note down to low c
-- variation 3 -- descending arpeggio at the end of each section continues down
-- variation 4 -- first note low C, various other patterns down the octave
-- end -- last 2 notes down the octave
There are quite a few recordings of K. 581 on the basset clarinet -- Antony Pay, Jean-Claude Vielhan, Eric Hoeprich, Sabine Meyer, Michael Collins and David Shifrin come to mind, and I know there are more.
Best regards.

Don, Gervase de Peyer has a good recording of the Quintet, IMO. It is done on period instruments. I have heard other recordings done on period instruments and I have to say this recording of Peyer´s beats most of them easily.

Clarinetist -
Are you sure about de Peyer? Most of his recordings were made over 25 years ago with the Melos Ensemble. There are a few newer ones on the Radiant Mastery label, including the Quintet, but I have that and it's on standard, modern instruments. As far as I know, de Peyer has never recorded on a period clarinet, or a modern basset clarinet.
Are you thinking of Keith Puddy?
Best regards.

Ken, I made a quick check and it seems that you are right, as usual. The recording I meant was indeed made with the melos ensemble of London, in 1964. Guess, You never know for sure about these things. For my ear, it sounded like it was played on period instruments. Thanks for the correction Ken! Although it is not played on period instruments, it´s still a recording worth to look if you haven´t yet!
