I just wanted to share how funny it is when the people an e-bay sell a clarinet and they say "and it even has som reeds with it!!!" they emphasize this and make it seem so important and they show you a picture of the reeds and. . . they are old crapy dirty chiped used reeds...or even better not even clarinet reeds...what real clarinet player would want THAT...i just think thast so funny...what do you think???

A lot of things about Ebay are funny. That is also frequently done with mouthpieces - "Mouthpiece comes with it!" says the advertisement. Just remember that on Ebay, everyone's real, and everyone's looking to get what they think they deserve. While some sellers go out of their way to make their "customers" happy, it's good to remember that you get what you pay for. If it says "comes with mouthpiece", that doesn't by necessity mean that it's a good mouthpiece, or even the mouthpiece that came with the instrument. If it "comes with reeds" it may be reeds that were used as dog chewing toys for a while.

i have seen mouthpieces too that sat "comes with reed" and when you look at the picture the reed is so nasty it makes the mouthpiece look worse then it is...they also try and sell them to you without telling you what it is...i guess all thast good in some cases...like my clarinet...the guy didnt know what he had thought it was a flute so we got it cheep...but the repairs were not the guy didnt take good care of it...could ahve been worse...oh well...e-bay=dummys

I always marvel at the "you get what you pay for" slogan. Years ago there was a move short subject in which the slogan was "Monkeys is the funniest peoples".....

Setting up an eBay ad & doing a credible job can be a daunting task, especially for someone who offers an eclectic mix of auction goods. There is an argument to be made that says some of the best deals come from non-experts. I think it's fair to say that we should all give a break to non-clarinet sellers.

My favorite was along the lines of "The reed is a bit old, it might need to be replaced." Like it was a broken key or something. I shudder to think of how old the reed was (it had a picture too!)
I also still have saved an image from a "comes with five reeds!" auction. They were all used, and the player apparently played right after eating quite often.

Yes, I think that's a fair statement......since I recently got one.

Statements such as these are useful in that they clue you in as to how much the seller actually knows about the instruments.

Well, I guess I can't complain about ppl's lack of knowledge on ebay. I bought, what the person described as, a "glass mouthpiece with a chip." So for $5, I bought it, thinking it could be something. I got it, and it was a '62 O'Brien Crystal mpc with a chip in the beak, which I'm gonna get fixed soon. hehe.

If everyone checked the archives before posting, there wouldn't be too many new topics.

I think that sometimes we get too hungup about checking the archives. After all, aren't we just trying to reach out to our fellow musicians....

There still are lots of topics that have never been discussed.
However, searching past threads is always advisable for the huge body of information already contained. In addition, some very knowledgable individuals may tire of repeating themselves on a frequent basis and may not respond to the new posting at all. Without the search, the inquirer may miss the best information altogether...GBK

....just yesterday a got a great deal on a clarinet that was sold "for parts"....the seller had purchased it from an estate and said he didn't realize until he got it home that it was incomplete (it was only missing the mouthpiece)
right now there is an auction running for "two old clarinet bodies" which are actually oboes...

them not knowing can be good...the person I bought my Clarinet from thought it was a Flute(i have no idea how as it is wood and had a mouthpiece with it) he didnt take to good care of it so we had to have it repaired a lot but for the 10 bucks we bought it for it was worth it...I love it...and I had one of the best Clarinets on the line in HS...and I took the best care of it(most of them would leave there reed on for months and not put it back in the case...just shove it whole into their locker...i couldent do that...its my baby)

(a seller's) Ignorance can indeed be (the buyer's) Bliss.....my current #1 favorite daily-player Kohlert bass clarinet was obtained on eBay for a paltry sum because the seller had it listed as an ALTO clarinet, and had only posted one blurry, fuzzy photo taken from a very odd angle --- so I was perhaps the only viewer who recognized it as a BASS clarinet, and was the only bidder.
Or as an old friend used to say:
"Somedays your house burns up;
somedays your house burns down"

I've experienced benefits from lack of knowledge too, however, in my case, it was at a pawn shop. They had an efer for sale, but the owner thought that it was a child sized instrument (like violins or guitars). I got it so cheap and then had it overhauled. Can't help but feel a little guilty about it, but you would think they would attempt to research what they are selling...

HAHAHA... I got some reeds with a clarinet I got off of ebay... they're size 3 1/2 and too strong anyways... don't look like they've been played, but that's just nasty anyways, because the box was open and there was only 6 reeds... hahahaha.... I ain't touchin them though...
