 "Bring your clarinet!!!!"
Author: AJ

Hello everyone! Im in Michigan now in oakland. There was a conference in Ann Arbor in one of the hotels for about four or five days and my mom wanted me to bring my clarinet. I refused. Then she kind of got angry at me and kept on telling me to bring it, it wasnt only her now, it was my older brother and my two uncles. "Bring your clarinet!!" Finally in the end I decided not to and we had left to the conference. I never really told them why I didnt bring it.

The truth is ive been in concerts all year, taking parts in over five to six different groups and private lessons. Almost every night there was a practice. Now the summer came and I just wanted a break. Just for a couple days! I didnt bring my clarinet becuase I wanted people to know me for once without my music becuase all I felt was people meeting me becuase of my ability to play clarinet. That really got me mad! What am I without my music!!

I was actually having fun with the kids I met! There wasnt that usual tension around me becuase they didnt know about my "talent". Anyway right now my mom is probably still angry at me. I just wanted to know if guys think I had a point or was I making sense. Any comments on my actions? Thankyou everyone!

AJ

There are times when you take a break, but an opportunity like a clarinet conference isn't one of them! Imagine what you could have learned.

What was their motivation for urging you to bring your instrument? Was it to show off how talented you are? If so, I would consider that antithetical to a Christian conference. Was it so that you could contribute in some manner to the spiritual wellbeing of others at the conference, for example in a musical ensemble that the conference was planning on having? If so, that would have been a noble reason to take it, but if your attitude would have turned it into a negative experience for others, it may have been best that you didn't.

The best way to handle situations where you and your parents disagree is to calmly listen to their reasoning and calmly and rationally explain your position, asking for their understanding.

Ten to one says they wanted a private concert or two. Relatives always do.

Always do what your mother tells you to do.

I have the same problem. I'm also sick of hearing "Bring your clarinet!". It's wherever we go. I do occasionaly. But it gets irritating. If my relatives wanna hear me play that's why I have concerts.

No hurt feelings :)

You mean there are people whose families want to hear them play clarinet? I thought that was just a myth!

There's always a Clarinet in the trunk of my car. Whether I take it out at the drop of someone else's hat is another matter entirely. If anyone wants to jam some Jazz, it'll be out in no time.

17 or 67, it's pretty much the same. Years ago, my mother enjoyed showing me off because she was proud of me. Too much so, I think. At any rate it was often too much for me to handle comfortably. Best response to something like that? "Sure, Mom." Enjoy the realization that it won't always be that way. Now my wife encourages me to play, because she enjoys the sounds -- snappy youngster that she is. So now I don't whine so much. Of course, now I get to play what I like. [wink]

Regards,
John

I have been told by an old musician in the family, that it is a "sin" to leave a musical instrument in the trunk of a car".

I heard it's only a SIN if it's an Acordian---and you DON"T leave it there.

Indeed! Surely, there's something he hasn't told us! Did he drug his family right before this event happened?

Have you heard the saying "If momma ain't happy, ain't NOBODY happy!"

I hope you tried to explain to her what you explained to us. She should be able to understand the need for a break from the usual. Try to see things from both sides.

BTW, I do understand your point.
