My Jazz band teacher(also one of our concert band directors) being as cool as she is, let me join jazz band on the Clarinet. i have some experience from playing musical in and out of school (she heard me b/c she was playing in the musical too, that's how i landed the postition). I was just wondering if there is anything i could to to prepare for this. I'll prolly learn most from my teacher b/c she is incredible, but.....many of you guys are incredible as well.
Any of advice would be appreciated.
BTW, lol, i know i need to use a lighter reed. I've been told taht countless times.
also, this is highschool.

Listen to some jazz clarinet players--Pete Fountain, Benny Goodman, Peewee Russel, Buddy DeFranco, Eddie Daniels, etc. You've got to hear it before you can play it.

Add Tim Laughlin eto that list if you want to hear a contemporary player doing traditional jazz. Just go to www.timlaughlin.com and there are some mp3 clips from each of his albums. You will hear very clean and tasteful jazz. The older albums have full songs - Sweet Georgia Brown, I Found a New Baby. Listen a lot, as Bob says.

Practice chords and do a lot of listening. Also, I wouldn't get overly concerned with reed selection. This may be an exception to the rule but Eddie Daniels told me he plays a #4 Vandoren, sometimes sitffer and he uses a close MP.

Listen to the original players from New Orleans first! That's where jazz came from originally - this is a must!

Always a good idea to go back to the source. But I don't see where chronological order is carved in stone. I was hip to modern cats like Buddy Defranco and Eddie Daniels before I got hip to the early New Orleans cats.
