This question is a little vague.... I have a chedville which is wonderful, but I don't know much about them in general. I imagine that they come in a variety of different "models", so there probably isn't much you can say that will apply to all of them... Also, if it had a buffet logo, it would probably be a buffet mouthpiece...

Are you thinking of buying one? Is there something more specific you can ask that will be easier to answer..

There are a lot of different logos on Ched mouthpieces. There are those with the C. Chedeville logo, the other brother (forget his name) logo and lots of other ones. For a certain period, a variety of manufacturers bought Chedeville blanks and put their logos on them. Both Buffet and Evette Schaefer did this. These Cheds have 3 rings on the bottom and 1 on top. Some of these pieces play beautifully, some don't, just like any other mouthpiece. But if you have a Buffet piece with 3 rings on the bottom, it's a Ched.

You want a great clarinet mouthpiece, quit messing and guessing around, call Greg Smith. You get just about the best mouthpiece that money can buy and there is no guesswork. Of course, making it sound great, well, there you have to contribute something. special yourself.

Some cheds--those with their own designation on it have a doric(?) chain link pattern on them. I guess today we call it filegreed(sp?)

Others can have two lines but also the "qualitie superioure" printing next to the table.

Others just have two lines below but say chas chedeville on them. Others say Lelandais who was partner or bought them out.
The new Glotins have the ch.ched. label and two lines below that are close together. Others have the lines farther apart and may be older.

The other bro. is Henri who lived in Phila and knew Moenig and did some facings on French cheds that got to the Phila Orch and that is maybe the way they got so popular.

Blanks were made and perhaps faced for instrument companies incl older Buffets and others. These have the 3 downside lines. sometimes a crown.

The Chedeville Co. made mouthpieces for many other clarinet makers in addition to their own signature mouthpieces. During the 1950s, 60's, these mouthpieces often had the :Qualitie Superieure" indication on them--they Daniel Bonade, some Bettoney mouthpieces of this time , some Cartier, SMl and many others. The most sought after, and most valuable Chedeville mouthpieces, in my opinion, actually were made before the fillagree, C/C Ch. Charles Chedeville mouthpieces of the 1950's which are still relativey easy to purchase. The older 1940's "Artistic Facing" Chedeville and Lelandais mouthpieces, many with three lines down in addition and with the Lelandais, or Chedeville signature on the bottom of the back if in good original condition are simply beautiful mouthpieces.

There are three sub sets of Chedeville Mouthpieces...

Charles Chedeville which are inferior in my opinion..

The Henri Chedeville which were much finer and more precisely made...

The Chedeville Lelandais which among these I would consider the finer of the the whole group. I have two Henri Chedeville and one LELANDAIs and these particularly played much better than the Charles Chedeville which I consider to be worth avoiding.

I'm not meaning to get off topic, but I have to ask this question...

Has anyone come across a Chedeville saxophone mouthpiece? I recently learned that some exist.

Thanks, Roger

Chedeville sax mouthpieces appear from time to time on eBay. There was even a Chedeville single-reed mouthpiece for bassoon several years back (which went for over $1,000).

Best regards.
