TKS for the chuckles, Vytas, like Murphy's Law?, if its possible, it will be [mis-spelled/communicated]. I suspect I've done my share toward sheer confusion also, so only throw SMALL rocks ! Don

Thanx, Mark, Don

My favorite EBay ads are the ones that go,

RARE! VINTAGE CLARINET! LOOK!!!!!

"I know nothing whatsoever about musical instruments. Some told me this is a clarinet [spelling variable, as per Vytas, above]. I [choose one]:
- got it from my great aunt's attic;
- picked it up at an estate sale;
- got it from my roommate's brother's girlfriend, whose cousin used to play it when they were in high school in 1976.

"But it looks like it's in real good shape. It is wood, which creates the tone that all musicians seek. All the valves [sic] work. The piece that the mouthpiece goes into to connect it to the other piece is missing, and the flared part has a crack. One of the ends where there is cork is broken. This would make a great instrument for the beginner or advanced player."

Above description is usually accompanied by a photo of a plastic clarinet put together wrong, laying on top of a rotten (literally) case. Invariably, the mouthpiece is turned UP (reed on top). And the price asked can vary from $25.00 to $295.00.

Caveat emptor, indeed!

I must say that I do believe some of the "inventive" spellings Vytas listed above are actually typos. Not that the person selling should use their blasted spell-checker or anything... LOL! ;)

i like the ones that say 'the valves work fine' - hm, i like to email those sellers and ask, 'are those rotary valves, or straight valves?'

or, 'teacher approved' - well, not this teacher, who the heck approves that made in outer-nowhere junk anyway :)

Actually, my mega-favorites are the sellers who advertise something as a flute, and it's actually a clarinet, or advertise an instrument as a clarinet -- "Clarinet -- mouthpiece missing" -- but it's actually an oboe, Myrtle.

Well, I would probably make the same mistakes if I were trying to sell, say, power tools. Router? Sander? Duh!
