Hey everyone,
Do you all have recordings of yourselves playing anything on any instrument? I'd love to hear how any of you play and I feel I gain a lot from listening to recordings. If that'd be alright, I would gladly like to hear them via e-mail or online (rbi99@aol.com) or if you wanted to send them through the mail. Whatever's clever.
Also, any recordings you have of your own bands or orchestras would be awesome, as well. I myself have a TON of recordings of my high school band playing. I am very proud to share recordings of my band because we are nationally and internationally recognized as one of the top high school bands. (You don't want ones of just me playing, trust me. lol)
Recordings I have of my own Brockton High School bands and jazz bands of Massachusetts are as follows:
*Holiday Concert Selections*
Alleluia! Laudamus Te...Christmas Curtain Raiser...Coventry Carol/Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring...Exultation...Greensleeves...Hallelujah Chorus (w/ and w/o chorus)...In the Christmas Mood...Joy to the World...Midnight Sleighride...New Age Christmas...Rhapsody for Hanukkah...Sleigh Ride...Russian Christmas Music...Panis Angelicus...Christmas in the Air
*Spring and Pops Concert Selections*
A Trumpeter's Lullaby...American Salute...Andrew Lloyd Webber: A Symphonic Portrait...Apocalyps II...Barber of Seville Overture...Batman Soundtrack Highlights...By Love Compelled (In the Hour of Shadows)...Cielito Lindo...Fate of the Gods...Inchon...Irish Tune from County Derry...Incantaion and Dance...MacArthur Park...Man of La Mancha...First Suite in Eb for Military Band...Rhapsody in Blue (The entire thing)...Root Beer Rag...Selections from Les Miserables...The Godfather Medley (composed by one of our own)...76 Trombones...Eternal Father, Strong to Save...Festive Overture...Hands Across the Sea...Radetzky March...Russian Sailors' Dance...La Fiesta Mexicana...Clarinet Concerto (Mozart)...Jazz Suite No. 2...Marche: LePiccadilly...Overture to Candide...Quality Plus March...Symphony No. 3 "Slavyanskaya"...Variations on a Korean Folk Song...Bolero...Viva Italia!...March Creole...Sinatra in Concert...Suite of Old American Dances...The Blues Factory...Tribute to Lionel..."Galop" from Genevieve de Brabant
*Jazz Concert Selections*
Ain't Misbehavin'...Begin the Beguine (ft. Dick Johnson)...Bone Busters...Caught Speeding...Count Bubba...Don't Get Around Much Anymore...Explosion...Gonna Fly Now (ft. Maynard Ferguson)...Groovin' High...Loverman...My Funny Valentine...One O'Clock Jump...Sambandrea Swing...Sing Sing Sing (ft. Dick Johnson)...Sing, Sang, Sung...Song is You...Stairway to the Stars...Struttin' With Some Barbeque...Willow Weep for Me
Sorry so lengthy, I just really enjoy listening to others and don't mind having others listen to us at all, either and like to know what others think.

Yeah, I wouldn't mind exchanging a few (from two different high school bands I've been a part of, one in New Mexico, one in Alaska. One quite good, the other not so!). You planning on exchanging them through aol?

I once tried to record myself playing the Eb contra. I'm just assuming the sound that I heard when I replayed it was the fault of the recorder and microphone placement. It is to shudder.

I posted a recording of myself playing the Osborne Rhapsody about a year ago, I'm sure you could find the link (if it's still there) by doing a search.

Recordings aren't "attachable" ... and there's a reason. While it is an admirable goal, trying to figure out which recordings would be "postable" and which wouldn't is a daunting task. There's always the copyright issue hanging about - if the music is under copyright, a public performance can't be posted without permission, and if it's a professional recording, it's under copyright and can't be posted without permission.
I'm imagining that most people's recordings would be just fine, but trying to figure out the legalities of putting the recording on a public site is difficult. If you put your recording on a private site & put a link in it woulod be immensely better.

Igloo Bob, MikeyBoy, and anyone else--
I can either e-mail you the recordings, or send them to you via AIM (rbi99). Whatever works for you.

Contra, I have had similar feelings when playing the Bb clarinet. I have recorded myself with my computer. (I hope it is about the microphone that I think I sound occasionally odd and sort of streched out) I think I sound pretty good without recording myself. Anyway, I´m now getting a good microphone and see how it goes then. Btw. I haven´t got any cd recordings where I play the clarinet.

Concert recordings of both of the concert bands I belong to have been made. As webmaster of one of them, I intend to convert a few of the songs to MP3s and post them on the band's site. I'll try to let you know when I do.
The other group I belong to is in the process of recording a CD for sale. If Mark allows, I'll let you know how to get a copy of this (non-profit) group's CD when it comes out in early September.
Recordings of me alone? None.

OK, here's a link to the web-store of the orchestra I play in. If you scroll down the the Spring 2002 concert, you'll find the only MP3 track available: Overture to Marriage of Figaro. It's a pretty good performance (we're all amateurs), and I think the clarinets are in reasonable tune (I'm playing first). As you know, no big solos for clarinet in the Figaro overture. By the way, I'm single tounging (sorry, that thread was ended by Mark).
If you really want to hear how I sound (and I'm taking a big risk here - hoping that nobody actually cares enough to buy a CD), purchase any performance recorded after Spring 2002 - I normally play first on the overture and concerto. I think the best is Mendelssohn Hebrides Overture; most prominent is Verdi Luisa Miller Overture (nice sound, but I kind of drag).
Here's the link: http://www.chambersymphony.com/Store/Recordings.htm
Enjoy!
PS - this orchestra is strictly not-for-profit. In fact, one of our missions is to raise money for worthy music and non-music related causes.

I only have an MP3 I recorded as part of my midterm for Wind Ensemble, which explains why there's a blurb of me talking to my band director at the beginning. It's on my server, I have to dig it up.

Guess, I´m pretty relieved that others have had similar problems than I. There was a time when I really thought that I have a serious problem with my sound. Btw. I don´t sound so bad when I play furher away from the mike.

As for my own recordings.... I posted a mp3 of me playing the 1st of the Stravinsky pieces about half a year ago. I have since re-recorded the same piece, and it certainly came out significantly better. I also did some abysmal quality wav files a week or two ago of me playing some orchestral excerpts. I'll take time in the future to upload these new sound files onto a website...

David ... the CBC is a wonderful label (like our ABC Classics) yet sadly neglected outside their respective countries. I purchase a stack of CBC CDs on my most recent trip to BC. There isa wonderful recording of Sinfonia (sp?) Nova Scotia playing Delius, which I adore.

Dear Diz...afraid I am not on that one...however, you may have heard me on CBC Radio in some concerts that have been broadcast...
CBC is an excellent label...they have been sadly affected by cutbacks however...but still do a fair bit of recording.

i'd like to send you recordings of myself but i need to know you have enough space in your email address. since yahoo now upgraded and have a total of 100mb and a message limit of 10mb i don't think it would be a problem but your email is not on a yahoo address so i don't know. as soon as you say it's ok i'll send you some files if you want!
all the recordings i have of myself (that ones i am proud of at least) are not of classical pieces or jazz standards. only of original pieces that composers have asked me to play clarinet/bass clarinet in them.
bingo, you can also contact me at clarnibass@yahoo.com
thanks

I have added mp3s of a few numbers to the Indianapolis Municipal Band web site at http://www.indianapolismunicipalband.org. Go to the Performances page and download them from the mp3 links. You may not be able to specifically pick out my bass clarinet, but there are some passages where our clarinets can be clearly heard (e.g., at the beginning of "Nimrod").
(And, if you dare look in the right place, you may even find a picture of me.)

I wanna say thanks for everyone who's submitted recordings for me and others to hear. It truly is a great thing to be able to hear each other and I think it's a learning experience, as well. And also, it's got some motivational power. (Caught myself saying, "I wanna sound like that!!!! Ooooo!") Haha. Well, thanks, and if ya got more keep 'em coming!!

Sylvain,
What a wonderful performance of the Brahms! I greatly enjoyed it.
Of course, one could have hoped the recording quality was higher, as the sound becomes a bit unclear during areas with increased musical texture. But can't complain about the playing. Especially the clarinet!!
I don't know what level the group is, but this was definately a pro-worthy performance, and if not, nothing less than a semi-pro/graduate school ensemble.

Sylvain, I enjoyed listening to your Brahms too. But you should really check up on your tuning. Sometimes you were almost a quarter tone sharp! If you get your intonation to the same level as other aspects of your playing, you'll be a fine clarientist indeed!

Kevin and Liquorice,
Thanks for the feed back.
I am just an amateur. The pianist is a monster player. Although he is now an acountant, I think he has a degree from the New England Conservatory. The cellist tried to make a run at a pro career, but did not quite make it. The recording really does not do justice to her sound.
Brahms trio is difficult musically for the clarinet , but really it is nothing compared to the technical challenges the cello part has and the piano part is just impossible to play. I got really lucky, finding these players.
Liquorice I agree with the tuning, it hs always been my pitfall. I can usually figure it out for one setting, but getting in a concert hall with a piano a bit out of tune and I am lost. Anyways, by the time I reached the second movement I was so sharp even I was able to notice it. Unfortunately, there was already nothing left to pull on my clarinet :( Hearing that last chord makes me cringe!
Thanks for the feedback and hopfully I will get to hear your stuff one day!

Geocities is a free hosting that has worked fine for me. However, they only allow 15 MB of storage (more space can be bought), and sometimes you cannot link to music files stored on a free geocities account from another site.

Clarnibass,
Fortuantely for me I always had access through work or school to a large amount of space and bandwith. I also set up my own web server, so I never really had to use web hosting services.

After a long layoff do to breaking my hand in half, I recorded this and it is doing rather well. Now playing again, thank God, I have two cd projects in the works to be finished around February.
Also, back to the studios with any luck.

Sorry to be bringing back a dead thread, but I've got a new self recording of Abyss of the Birds (Movement III) from Olivier Messiaen's Quartet for the End of Time. A fantastic piece for solo clarinet based on the octatonic scale. Got the score yesterday and recorded myself playing on it tonight; just for fun, not for serious study.
Edited and compressed 64 kbps MP3 file:
http://reyesformvp.100free.com/messiaen_abyss-compressed.mp3
I suggest right-clicking and save. approx 3.5 MB, 7'30"

My university now hosts a Live365 station. I'm on the "Wind Symphony" tracks: the Stanhope Folk Songs (on 3rd), and the Bremer Symphony (on 2nd). It's a radio station, so you just have to wait for the tracks to come up.
