I recently played this with a band not to long ago and really enjoyed the extended clarinet solos in particular.
Now I went to listen to the recording with Col. Grahm and the USAF and the big solo in the begining was a cello (with band? weird) and the other ones were played by the whole section. Now aside from knowing that in the orchestral version the first solo is for cello, does Col. Grahm have a problem with solo clarinet? I was just kind of annoyed that everything that was supposed to be solo wasn't.

Our Tulsa Comm. Band played M, N, & Nite at several concerts, ?a year ago?, greatly enjoying it, even the tough parts. Being blessed with several skilled sop cl'ists {[this] Daddy Plays Bass, cl that is,}, we had variety in the solo playing. Among what classics we play, this ranks rite up with Der RosenKavalier on "band popularity", not quite as difficult as Der, tho, Don

I doubt he has a problem with it, but it's a nice effect sometimes. Especially with how the 1st clarinet in the All County Band down here in Miami sounded on it at times, I would've preferred a cello substitution. My wind ensemble performed Offenbach's La Belle Heléne several times this past year with 4 cellists, and apart from the fact that we used more celli than Col. Gabriel did when he performed it (and the version was arranged for him) we only got good comments from audience members including him.

Don't get me wrong, I generally favor the vast colors an orchestra possesses over a concert band, but it seems out of place to me, to have a cellist playing this solo though I must admit it is a little smoother due to the cello's ability to utilize vibrato on the instrument.
Anyhow, I just wanted to hear the clarinet, its my favorite band piece

Hmm in the version that I played, the solo was done by a tenor sax. The 1st clarinet part had the cues.

I once played in a concert band that accompanied the Bruch violin concerto ... it was horrid (the violinist was good, the arrangement was reasonable, but they just clashed).

We are currently playing this peice in my Wind Ensemble (In a concert tonight, actually) and the beggening solo is played by 1st clarinet and alto sax in unison. It sounds really good. However, I did love the Cello version the USAF band did.

--Lowell Graham was/is a clarinet player, and without second-guessing his musical motive I can answer the question by affirming I spent my entire USAF Band career, all 24 years of it avoiding the man like a plague (and was successful). v/r Ken

If I am not mistaken, the Air Force Band regularly employs a small section of cellos for all their performances.

Circa 1962 we did this piece with the Phila All City band.....and we invited a cellist. The cellist went on to have a pro career.
Perhaps the cello solo is so well etched in the minds of audiences, that the arranger did not wish to alter it
.....frankly, I think a bassoon solo or tenor sax would work ok...or a great baritone horn. Yes....euphonium or baritone horn...that would work nicely
I wonder how the River City Brass Band (PittsburghPro wind group) or the American River wind symph. would handle it...or Eastman Roch. winds (Finnell, recently deceased)
