I just killed a scorpion with my Bass Clarinet
Author: Igloo Bob

Saw it moving across my floor. I have 3 sisters under the age of 4, and so my natural instinct was to kill it ASAP. Looking around, I saw nothing with which to squish it, but I had my high school-owned bass clarinet out, so I used the bell to squish the thing. 20 squishes and lots of washing of the bell later, I killed the scorpion, and my instrument has once again proven its versatility.

I chased the cat out of the house yesterday actually - by blowing hard.

I only need to open my clarinet case to get my dog to make a hasty escape.

Yeah, dogs hate clarinets. But mine doesn't seem to mind the oboe at all. Curious.

Maybe this is because he has already left the building, when you grab the oboe case? [toast]

When I moved into my neighborhood, there were so many cats that the squirrels preferred to stay in the tops of trees.

Now cats are an uncommon sight and the squirrels have overrun the bird feeder.

To try to restore the balance, I have cut back on my eefer playing.

Strangely enough, when I play my eefer, my cats actually remain in the room. The first time I tooted around on my Bb when I got the cats last fall (well before I even got the eefer), they ran as far away as they could get in this tiny apartment!

When I practice clarinet, my choc. lab Bailey simply goes to *his* couch and falls asleep--unfortunately, much the same reaction some people have to my jazz interpretations...............(ZZZZZZZZZZ)

When I was a teenager ( a millennium ago) I had a kitten that I would put in my lap when I practiced . He got so accustumed to this that he would curl up in my lap and go to sleep whenever I took the clarinet out. I guess long tones and finger exercises proved to be soporific. Works with me too.

I killed a black widow with a stick...only took one squish....does that count? She was a nice fat one, too.....and her guts splatted everywhere, even in my face [happy]

sue

PS. my cats don't mind the clarinet playing...it's the vacuum cleaner that they run from.

I expected a lot of stinging sarcasm about this post, so I'm glad to see posters are taking this event seriously. BTW, were the scorpion parts written for low Eb or C? And the next time you played the BC, did all your parts include a stinger on the end? And since it was a scorpion, I assume you counted it in eight . . .

6/8, to be precise. Everything in life should be counted in 6/8, I say!

My Akita, Yoshi, howls when I play bass clarinet. When he was a puppy, I used to play low E's and F's on the clarinet for him, and he would tilt his head this way and that and try to lick inside the bell of the instrument. [grin] Our mutt, Pepper, cries when I play high notes (sirens do the same thing to her). Dryfuss, the Great Pyrenees, just ignores me.

My cat starts "talking" to me when I get the flute out. Don't know if that means that she likes it or not, but a high G will clear the room. She doesn't seem to mind the clarinet. The fuzzy things that come out of my sax make great kitty toys!

Pam H wrote, "The fuzzy things that come out of my sax make great kitty toys!"

That reminds me of a recent Capitol City Band rehearsal that was going quite well.........until a cockroach crawled out of one of the bassoons.

FWIW, it was a Heckle.

Well, I was playing a long high C# on my oboe and a raccoon came to the door window. Is it likely that it thought it was a mating call?
