Regarding an article in the current edition of The Clarinet, has anyone tried the barrels and bells that Morrie Bakun is making in Vancouver, Canada??

Sure the stuff is beautiful, but does expending that kind of money make much difference in the longest note?

Since he is an instrument and accessories dealer and therefore might not be at liberty to endorse the Backun products in a public forum, Graham Golden in some private emails to me last year had some very positive things to say about the barrels and bells. They certainly are attractive, if nothing else.

(Disclaimer - I sell a specialty barrel)
From my own recent experience in designing the Power Barrel I have been initiated into the subtle world of interactions of barrel materials, mass of barrel material, barrel design, and interactions with the bore for the barrel. There are significant tonal differences produced by the same clarinet with barrels of different bore and barrel materials and even similar bores with different barrel materials. Morrie has taken these interactions to a fine level of sophistication and beauty of the woods used. I do not have the spare cash to buy one for myself but a student who worked for me (what an irony) at the Oklahoma Clarinet Symposium was having troubles with the upper register of her Eb clarinet and bought a barrel from Morrie which fixed the problem beautifully. This is of course a second hand observation but many professionals were at Morrie's booth showing smiles upon trying out his barrels and bells on their clarinets.

I could care less what they look like (though they do look quite nice). They play like magic. The notes practically draw themselves out of my clarinet.

What I'm sayin' sounds almost impossible, but - my R-13 just was wanting to play sharp and not really be in tune. I tried many Backun barrels at the New Orleans fest a couple (three?) years ago. Found one that put every single note right in dead center of the tuning dial. And I love the sound and feel of it. Got a bell too. Love the added weight(?) or whatever it adds to the sound and/or feel of playing. Plus, get innumerable compliments & inquiries as to what is that beautiful barrel or bell. Can't wait to try a bell for my Buffet low C. Hope they charge less than Rossi.

If trying Morrie's product at a clarinet fest is exciting you should try a visit to his shop! Of course if you live a long way from Vancouver that would be a tad difficult. (But a visit to Vancoucer should include a visit to his shop.) I have not done exhaustive trials of his bells and barrels but the little I have done convinced me that they do make a huge difference. And yes they are costly, hence my reluctance to purchase. And what is a real treat is watching the machine make one!

Like any piece of equipment, I have known some people who like them and others who did not. They are certainly a well designed and thought out product. You have to see for yourself. I have yet to play anything which makes the clarinet play itself. Practice does help, though....

Purchased a Barrel & Bell which Morrie selected for a Eb Soprano. Took it from a nice clarinet to a superb instrument. Morrie is very knowledgable, a true artisan.

At the Oklahoma Symposium, Morrie ran a special on Barrels & Bells to the tune of approx. 15% off or thereabouts. I have no idea if this was a 1-time special or a regular Show discount. I presume that Backun & Co. will be @ ClarinetFest in MD.
