I found a Buffet Crampon clarinet today at an antique shop, but there was not a serial number anywhere. I searched the web for the resource I used to use to date a clarinet, but have not found it. I wasn't aware that there were any Buffet clarinets without a serial number. It is in a damaged Yamaha case, so they are calling it a Yamaha, but it is a Buffet Crampon and the wood is beautiful. Is there any way I can figure out what this is?

Prior to about 1885, the did not put serial numbers on the instrument. Howeve if it really is this old, it is probably High Pitch and not much use for playing in a modern band.
However, it is much more likely that the serial number is too worn to notice. Examine the instrument closely in bright sunlight and you may see faint indications of the serial number. Try a magnifying glass also.

I have a 1911 Buffet in A, and I could not find a serial number on it at first....but Mark told me where to look, and sure enough there it was, on the lower joint ONLY, and very tiny. But in good light and with my reading glasses I was able to see it.
