Hi folks,
I don't write here very often but I do read all your interesting and fun posts;
lots more fun than the Klarinet email list, I must add. Keep it up!
Anyways, I just had to tell you all about my new cocobolo barrel, made by Allan Segal. I asked him to make me a "fat" barrel and did he ever! My teenaged daughter thinks it looks like it is retaining water, but I love it. It is an absolutely beautiful piece of workmanship, and on top of that, my R13 sounds REALLY COOL when I use it. Allan is a regular poster on this BB (alseg) and offers his barrels on ebay.
I could go on and describe the sound, how it clears up the throat tones and improves intonation, but that's what they all say and it's actually a matter of trying different barrels with your setup to see what works. This one happens to work great for me, with my 1959 R13 and both my Ralph Morgan RM15 and my Chadash/Hill mouthpiece.
I also have Clark Fobes, Walter Grabner and Jimmy Yan barrels, all of which are very excellent. Allan's barrel ranks right up there with the rest of them, and I want to give him a big old PAT ON THE BACK! Way to go Allan!
Some of you may already have tried one of Allan's barrels but for those of you that have not, I would recommend you give one a try. Like I said, mine is cocobolo but he also uses other exotic hardwoods. I am attaching a picture mine for you all to drool over.
Sue
PS I am not being paid to say this. I just love this barrel and want to tell the world about it!

Nope, it's not bloated on the inside
It has a tapered bore, approximately .003-4 wider at the inlet, with a point of inflection 2/3 of the way to the outlet......I got this information from his current ebay listing. If you want you can do an eBay search for "clarinetconcepts"

I'm sure cocobolo beats brass;
It simply exudes lots of class!
With all those prime barrels in hand, though,
the cost must have been more than a grand, no?!
Dear Sue, do you suffer from GAS*?

Sorry, Sue, I just couldn't resist!

Verrrrrrrrry funny.
Actually I didn't spend all that much on them; a couple were acquired through bartering, one came with a clarinet and I only paid full price for one of them....
I will likely be selling a couple of them at some point, once I make up my mind which ones to use on which clarinets with which mouthpieces with which reeds for which styles of music

My pennies I'll squirrel away,
To purchase one without delay.
I don't care about sound,
But a thought more profound:
Will it look weird with my Buffet? ...GBK

To GBK:
It looks weird on my Buffet, Glenn
It'd likely look weird on yours too, then
It ain't got no rings
But man does it sing
Who cares about looks? it's my friend
okay I'm not much of a limerick writer.....my apologies to all

So you say that the rings are a lackin'.
But don't you then worry 'bout crackin' ?
With all that you've found,
Should I still ask around,
Or get the one from Morrie Backun? ...GBK
