I just saw the Tom Hanks movie "Terminal" where he plays a foreigner stranded for nine months at the JFK airport. Although I highly recommend this romantic comedy, I was also very interested in listening for the recurring clarinet theme throughout the movie. 
While staying to watch the credits and enjoying yet another clarinet solo, I was pretty surprised that they would credit the soloist--Emily Bernstein. (It wasn't John Moses!) The soundtrack was composed by John Williams and sounded like a winner to me!
Anyone see the movie or know who this Emily Bernstein might be?
Are there any other movies that have featured the sound of the clarinet so prominently?

How about "The Sting", that sweet ragtime should go well on a clar, both in the chalemeau and clarion ! Will rent the video again ! Also "Wine and Roses" , more nostalgia ?? Don

The Zoloft commercial had a clarinet solo (ironically, at least to me, clarinet playing seems like a much better cure for depression than taking medicine! Maybe doctors should prescribe that instead...

This gives me the opportunity to mention the cute little clarinet solo at the beginning of 'Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind" . Just as Jim Carrey first drives off in his car. I wanted to point it out before, but thought that every one would have seen it already (we're a few months behind in the UK). I don't recall it having a prominent place in the score though. Great movie - and it takes place on Long Island .

I don't think the Zoloft solo was computer generated....but I can't say that I found the clarinetist's playing to be that interesting, either. It reminded me of some high-schooler playing a rose etude!

Hi All:
Emily Bernstein is a fine musician. She's been on a few dates here in NYC as a producer, and is very knowledgeable and helpful.
As mentioned above, I did not do "The Terminal" with Tom Hanks, but I did work with him a while ago on "You've Got Mail" (my clarinet solos can be heard whenever he opens his laptop).
I just recently finished recording the remake of "The Stepford Wives" with Nicole Kidman. I think it's out this summer, and has some nice clarinet writing that was enjoyable to get down on the track. Give it a listen!

375. Rerent "You've Got Mail" and listen for clarinet solos that I apparently missed the first three times I saw the movie. Listen as Tom Hanks opens his laptop.

Does anyone remember the Comedy Central series "The Critic" (I loved that show, may it rest in peace..). I believe it had a rather prominent clarinet solo in the Theme Song as well.

Emily actually taught at my school while my teacher was on sabbatical last year, and is a good teacher as well. She even takes a lot of younger (school-age) players and enjoys teaching them good foundations.

Now we know why his sound was legendary.....listen to the obligato section in Rex Harrison's recitatives. Wow..what a sound

Another film that features some wonderful clarinet tunes is 9 Months with Hugh Grant - a bit of a cheesy film with Hugh playing a bachelor who struggles with changes in his life when his girlfriend falls pregnant, but it's very bearable if you appreciate a sweet sounding clarinet throughout the movie.

Hola!
This isn't a movie, but it's got some really fun ethnic clarinet playing. It's a puzzle game that my mum downloaded. In the winter holiday version, a haunukah (sp? sorry!) puzzle had an awsome Jewish sounding clarinet tune going in the background. I love it! The Terminal reminded me of it. Has anyone alse "heard" this puzzle, so to speak?

I just now happened onto The Sting [1973] on TCM, the "sting" scenes, still GREAT! During the credits, The Entertainer was played, as an "echo" piano/clar duet, simple music played superbly. The only musician credit was Arr'd by Marvin Hamlish, from Scott Joplin rags. Can anyone name this clist?? and provide more info, please? Don

Have you ever seen "city slickers" with Billy Crystal. The opening intro has a cartoon with a cowboy and a bull, anyways, the background music has amazing clarinet solos. If you haven't seen the movie it is very good as well but the opening intro has very enjoyable clarinet writing.
I recently saw the Terminal as well, and I couldn't believe the awesome clarinet theme that kept on reoccuring and during the final credits I made my girlfriend stay so I could here the awesome solo. John Williams is awesome, it shows that he can write good for an instrument other than a brass instrument. Ha ha. just kidding.

Sorry, we didn't meet. Quite often the film sessions are busy and crowded, so we don't get to mingle much. I've occasionally met some of the film stars, and production people, but in general we keep to ourselves and just try to get through the music at the date.
