I see these posts and threads pop up all the time. Just what is a "fake" book? What is it that keeps it from becoming a "real" book? Is it because Gipetto made it? Does its spine grow with every lie? Please explain to me . . . I'm very curious . . . .

There was a subscription service many years ago that published tunes on cards that fit three to a normal 8 1/2 x 11 page. I think it was called "Tunedex" or "Songdex". A musician who subscribed would get new tunes, melodies and chords on these cards, soon after they were published.
At least two fake books were created using these cards and a photo repro system, as I have both of these books. Most of the tunes are from 50 years ago or more. As I recall, one had a red cover and was called "1000 Tunes" and the other, about the same size with a light brown cover, was exclusively for show tunes. They are long out of print and were considered to have been produced illegally. It would probably be illegal to copy them today and sell them. ASCAP and BMI would both get upset.

If I remember correctly, in the days when fake books were black market contraband, a [shhhh...] (Fake Book) was considered "HOT" in more ways than one

We always called them the "Black Book" and you had to (shhhhh), get them in secret from a music store dealer. Very illegal (copyrights you know) and very hush-hush.

"Black Book"???? In college, my black book served an entirely non-musical function--and was discarded before my wedding.

Rite Hank, I had a copy of the Brown Book, on back, with caution rec'd. Found some tunes in piano keys playable by small combos, which we would call out, going to transp. to me, Eb, for alto/bari sax, tpt to Bb. Never had any cpr trouble, too small, I guess ! Don
