I'm intrigued by the concept that music "opens doors." This occurs on many levels---I have had "doors opened" literally to new jobs/gigs/roles simply because of a shared love of music. I think music has a great ability to heal--perhaps it facilitates the opening of a physical/spiritual/psychological door that all of our souls harbor. What doors has music opened for you?

Well, being involved in amateur music groups over the course of my lifetime has very literally "opened doors" for me. I don't know how else I would ever have gotten to be backstage at the SF Opera, rubbing shoulders with Carol Van Ness and Samuel Ramey, if I hadn't been in the "extra" chorus in "Aida". Likewise for the Kennedy Center performance of Britten's "War Requiem" -- would I ever have otherwise had a chance to work with Julius Ruedel? Or. many years ago, I am certain I would not have made a tour of Southeast Asia (this was pre-Vietnam War, actually) had I not been chosen to tour with my college choir.
Weston Noble talks about bringing a special world into existence through musical performance. Although I can enjoy listening to certain music, I have never enjoyed listening to any music as much as I enjoy being a part of making it myself. And that's the biggest door that music opens for me -- the door to that special realm that I inhabit only when I am making music. Hands down, it is my favorite place to be.
