 Buffet Prestige - worth it??
Author: clarinet mama

I've heard a lot about the R-13's but are the Prestige models worth the extra cost? The literature says it takes more air - why? Does this tax the player in long passages?
Thanks!

Nope, not a bit. I have lots of air. (can't you tell ;)
I love my Prestige set. So does everyone who has tried them. I picked them out at Weiners from about 50 clarinets.

No.I bought a RC Prestige just after Boosey&Hawks bought Buffet.Dull tone.R-13(intonation deficient instrument) Prestige may be worse. Forget it!!!! Mouthpiece is what you had better seek and they are cheaper.

Hiroshi, ya just can't pan Buffet and get away with it cleanly ;) There are lots of great ones out there.
But that's a lot of money to have spent on something that you are not happy with.

Yes David.
I bought a RC Prestige in 1987. Maybe it was beyond my playing power.(Frankly,I suspected something might have changed to Buffet quality after B&H overtook the company:B&H has its own clarinet manufacturing facility, then how could they keep Buffet's tradition without comonnalyzing artisans and facilities.)

They didn't. The factory in Paris just changed owners, not technicians.

Whether or not the quality stayed the same (or got better or worse) - I don't know. But whatever happened (if anything) wasn't due to personnel turnover because of the acquisition.

I can't say about the soprano, but the Bass Prestige 1193 is head and shoulders better than the 1183. I will definitely try out the Prestige sopranos before buying my next horn. I suggest you do the same. There will be differences between horns, so try at least several of each model, and include the R-13's and Festivals at the same time. You may have to take a trip in order to do that, but you will be rewarded.

How about some elaboration, Robert? Why? Compared to what? What experiences have you had? The pros, the cons, the in-betweens.
