I'm looking to get a new clarinet, and what the heck is the reason for the pricepoint on these two instruments. How can they be more then handmake types?

Which handmakes? The Elite I'm unsure of, but the Tosca has not quite made the impact in the US that Buffet seems to have hoped it would make.

Strange? Same thing in The Netherlands and Belgium!

Not so much the elite now that I look, but the Tosca on WWBW goes for $4400, which to me seems insane.

Not sure how much of a splash we can expect the Tosca to make when almost nobody has seen much less played them. A month ago we were waiting for a set to display at a symposium in New Jersey, and nothing came off the proverbial boat from gay Paris. According to Francois Kloc, there should be two or three sets to noodle on at ICA next month, though.
Which is all by way of saying go play it for yourself and see if it is the instrument of your dreams and worth the $$$. If not, there is a whole world of less expensive professional instruments out there for the having.
Enjoy the hunt.

I've seen and played several (5 to be precise) Tosca's already....
But in my neighborhood I’ve met nobody (at this moment, but many who have tried the instrument) who liked them enough to change to the Tosca! Strange because the elite got much better comments when it came on the market…..Personally I still feel that the festival is the best clarinet from buffet… The R13 doesn’t seem to be in any shop in our country? So I could not say if I would find it better…

I feel the R-13 is the best clarinet made by buffet. It's good they are making different types of clarinets for us to find one that we feel is the best for us.
Most people do not have the money to buy a Tosca clarinet. I mean, at 4500 a pop you have to buy a Bb and an A clarinet if you are a serious orchestra musician and if you are are like me and go to the brannens than you can plan on spending about $10,000 for just an A and Bb.
I think people would look more at the Tosca if it was cheaper. Furthermore they have only been avalable in greenline only. Alot of people don't like the idea of switching from wood to something that isn't wood.
I played on the tosca at the midwest band and orchestra clinic about six months ago. I didn't like it at all. It was stuffy and didn't have the tone I was looking for. Once again, to each their own.

LeOpus1190s,
The wood version of the Tosca is already available...actually I haven't seen the greenline version at the moment. The price in our country is almost equal tot the Leblanc OpusII.

Well, apparantly -someone-'s buying the Tosca - WWBW now lists the Tosca B-flat as a top seller on their website. Maybe people buying are buying based on the logic that pricier = better? Throw in the fact that it's a Buffet, and perhaps there'd be plenty of people snapping it up for that reason alone. In any case, WWBW has the Grenadilla in stock and the Greenline on order.

It seems that the tosca is about 1000$ cheaper here in Finland than in the states. Don´t know how much people are buying them here...but buffets likely more than other brands like selmer and leblanc etc.

Ah yes...the law of diminishing returns in action.
As far as "best seller" goes....that is marketing ploy, methinks.
Festivals and Rcs etc more popular in Europe, R13 popular here.
What I notice is that the Yamahas and Selmer Sigs and Recitals less mentioned on the cbb but seem to have made inroads in pro ranks.

In Germany few people play Boehm clarinet. The list prices are 3344 € for a Festival and 4180€ for a Tosca (Bflat). But you could get them for roundabout 2400 € (Festival) or 3000 € (Tosca). This is not much more than the half of a handmade German clarinet. I did not try, have Tosca and Festival the same bore type or is the Tosca more resistant?

I play a Festival. I tried the Tosca's in January. I found them similar in overall resistance. The Tosca's seemed move even in response to me.

I actually know someone that owns an Elite!! The National Guard Band bought it for him. Anyway, he plays it exclusively, while his poor R13 sits in a case gathering dust.
Personally, it's a nice instrument, but it's too strange for my taste. And now he is realizing why no one wants them. Now that the weather has gotten warmer (he got it back in the winter), he is finding that he is ridiculously sharp!! And you can't just go buy a new barrel for the thing.
It's got cool gizmos on it and stuff, and it looks pretty... but that's about it. lol
Who the heck knows about the Tosca. lol

contragirl, doesn´t sound a bad deal, if you don´t have to pay a dime, even if it has some errors...

My cousin plays the elite to, great peace of art to look at....
But you just have to order a new barrel from Buffet if it's indeed to sharp....
