I was down in Melbourne over the weekend (12/13th June) and heard the Melbourne Symphony in the Arts Center Concert Hall (Hamar Hall).
A very, very traditional programme: Bach Orchestral Suite 4, Mozart Haffner and Brahms 1st symphony.
I was down in the stalls (A reserve) and couldn't really see past the strings - and didn't want to really, as I could hear the beautiful woodwind solos float over to my area. The new leader of the MSO is the wonderfully talented Wilma Smith (aparently we "stole" her from the New Zealand Symphony where she was their concert master). If you get a chance, listen to the broadcast this Wednesday evening (8pm on Classic FM). The playing was more or less faultless.
