 Being Flat!!

Ive borrowed an A clarinet for orchestra and Im always flat no matter how much I push in and the conductor keeps yelling at me!!! Ive asked for other barrels or mouth pieces but nothing works, its even worse. This clarinet is so flat no matter how much I warm up or anything. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Get a different clarinet?

Many orchestras tune high also (A=442 or higher), which compounds the problem. (In contrast, I'm usually sharp in an ensemble that tunes to 438)

I have to believe that if you can find a barrel, that fits but is shorter, the pitch will come up.

I guess having a custom barrel made is an expensive option, especially if it's not your clarinet.

Intonation may then turn out to be another problem, but that's for later.

Alex probably has the best advice, if you can find another clarinet to borrow.

Compare the lengths of your A and Bb barrels. Usually, the Bb is longer, but if it is not, perhaps you have them mixed up. Use the shorter barrel on the A and see if that helps. Just a thought..............

You need to sit down with a strobe and see if the clarinet is indeed flat or if the ensemble is sharp. Doesn't solve your problem, but at least tells you where you stand.

For whatever reason, I play naturally a little low on A, so if I'm playing with an ensemble that gets a little pitchy on the high side, I keep a 64mm barrel for those situations. Not the richest most resonant sound, but keeps the wolves from howling.

Good luck!
