My woodwind quintet seems to be going into a transition phase re: personnel. I was thinking that it might be good to find some mix and match quartet music to play when we don't have everyone there. There are some books by Last Resort Music that have some nice things in them, but they get really pricey by the time you get all the parts you need. Does anyone have any suggestions along this line that have good music but won't break the bank?

Well, depending on your remaining instrumentation, Rossini wrote a number of quartets for flute, clarinet, bassoon, and horn.

Best to you!

Thanks kdenny. Yes, we actually are without a regular oboe player at the moment. I think we have a couple of people who will be able to fill in sometimes. Also, I am the only one in the group who has small children, so it might be nice to have some stuff for them to play when I cannot be there. We have the Mozart Concertante (minus flute plus piano) and the Rimsky Korsakoff Quintet (minus oboe, plus piano), and we have had great fun with those.

I was having fun visualizing your kids filling in for you with the quintet -- maybe with their tiny hands, one child fingering the upper joint and another playing the bottom joint -- when I realized "them" referred to the remainder of your quintet.

there's also a beethoven, op. 16 (ob, cl, bsn, hn, and piano) and a mozart cassazione for (ob, cl, bsn, hn) if the flute player doesn't mind reading the oboe part. i'm not sure if mozart's authorship of the cassazione has been nailed down or not... but it's a fun piece. i'm actually doing woodwind stuff but we're missing a flute right now, hence my quartet suggestions. =)
